Title:
Severely Misunderstood (2012.04.17)

Kagami panted against the bright lamp of the basketball court. Sweat dripped down from his chin as he looked forward at where Kuroko had already succumbed to weariness and was taking a good gulp out of his water bottle at the edge of the court. It'd become colder, so now when he breathed outwards white steam puffs wisped in the air in front of him.

It had been exactly a week and three days since Kuroko had first kissed him. Since then they'd done nothing out of the ordinary - no more kissing, holding hands, nothing. The first few days Kagami had been understandably shy about asking - but now that it'd been a full ten days he was a little worried. Not that he thought Kuroko had short attention span or anything -

- "Hey." Kuroko's face popped up right in front of him and he fumbled with the ball for a moment before he dropped it after all. Kuroko picked it up and handed it back. "Are you alright?"

It was like attempting to solve one of those insanely difficult 3D puzzles, Kagami sighed inwardly. With his kind of IQ it was probably impossible. Plus this wasn't a 3D puzzle, with some sort of definite answer - this was a human being, and a particularly inscrutable one at that.

He longed vainly for the days when he was in America and when people would just tell you things. "You suck." "You're a retard." "You're awesome, man!" He always liked the last one.

"You've been staring at me for the last five minutes without answering." Kuroko poked him hard in the ribs with his finger right where Kagami was most ticklish, and he yelped.

"I'm fine! Geez," he muttered, rubbing his side absently. "I was thinking, though..." He frowned as he realized he now had to find a way to ask.

"Yes?"

He bit his lip. "This new drive...do you think it's something that anyone can do? Like even me, with a helluva lot of practice?"

Kuroko blinked. Kagami couldn't be 100% sure, but he thought for once he might've really caught Kuroko off guard. Had he been expecting some other question? "No," Kuroko answered at last. "But I can't be sure, so why don't you try it? You've seen it enough times by now."

Kagami resisted the urge to rub his eyes. Yesterday he'd spent hours after Kuroko had first shown him his new drive to pick it over and try to find a weak spot. They'd stayed at the neighborhood court until almost one in the morning, when Kuroko's hands finally gave out. They were still butterfly-taped, making his control more brittle than it'd been yesterday - but even so, Kagami hadn't been able to steal the ball from him once.

His watch was showing that if they really started on this path, they'd be here until the wee hours of the morning again. "Maybe tomorrow," Kagami straightened, mentally prepping the list of homework he still had to do when he got home. "We're tired out already from all this practice today, and -"

"Please."

That one single word, in that tone. It stopped Kagami in his tracks and even before he looked back he had the hunch that he'd be getting back late again, because Kuroko had that look on his face. The one that said that his suspicions had been tickled and was now intent on solving the mystery that - dammit - Kagami himself had brought up.

It was that quietly determined look that made people stop in their tracks and wonder how someone with such a lack of presence could suddenly burn so bright and so strong.

"Right," Kagami agreed, dropping into stance. They faced each other from opposite ends of the court. "Let's go."

He dropped into a run. He'd seen Kuroko repeat this so many times in the past two days that he'd probably be seeing it in his sleep tonight. Kuroko would stab to one side - Kagami chose left - and Kagami would follow - and then right, left, within firing range now -

- he didn't have time to take a breath, he pushed his own self down and tried to spin dodgesomething -

It wasn't flawlessly magical at all like Kuroko made it look because in the next second they'd crashed into each other like colliding freight trains and the ball flew somewhere but who cared when Kagami was suddenly lying on top of Kuroko?

He shot up on his elbows in a flash. Their legs had tangled and as he wiggled to get free of Kuroko who seemed to be everywhere like an octopus he realized with a flush that somehow he'd landed with both legs astride Kuroko's hips. And their crotches had been pressed together - he scrambled up to his feet with an embarrassed flush - and Kuroko shouldn't have looked like anything but a guy half-lying down with his butterfly tape all unraveling from one hand and one sneaker lying abandoned on the left.

Instead, he looked - what was a good word - delicious.

No. No no no Kagami didn't just think that. He clutched his hands to his head and turned away abruptly. He was halfway across the court when he turned, picked up the shoe, handed it to Kuroko, helped his teammate to his feet and then did an about-face and practically ran to gather his stuff.

"Kagami-kun," he could hear Kuroko calling but he wasn't listening, he wasn't ready. "Kagami-kun!" That face popped into his vision and he definitely didn't scream like a little girl.

"Don't do that, geez!"

Kuroko looked puzzled as he watched Kagami frantically stuffed water bottle, towel, and basketball into his bag. "What's wrong with you?"

That was exactly the question Kagami wanted to ask Kuroko. What's wrong with YOU?!, he wanted to wail, but reined in the impulse. Instead, he counted to five and then breathed out in a sigh. "I'm going home," he shrugged his bag onto his shoulder and moved towards the door.

The hand on his arm wasn't strong at all, yet it kept Kagami there. Kuroko, who was innocent and probably totally confused, was just trying to understand why practice was over after one failed attempt. "Did I do something wrong?" Kuroko wondered aloud.

Kagami was about to reply with a tired and overused No, it's not you, it's me when Kuroko's next words caught him off guard. "I thought you wanted some."

He blinked. That couldn't mean what he thought it meant and yet it couldn't mean anything but THAT. "What - what exactly do you mean by -"

"Sex," Kuroko clarified promptly.

Kagami skittered the other way and then realized belatedly that Kuroko now had him trapped, with his back against the fence. And he was closing in. "You've been staring at me for a whole week, so I thought that maybe you were just too shy to ask or something."

Kagami. Kagami, shy. "Um. No." Kuroko waited patiently for the rest to come out. "No, I didn't want to have sex - I mean, I don't want to have sex. Now."

"Why not?" Again, that look was genuinely curious.

"Er." And those blue eyes really had no business being so piercing. "It's not that I don't like you or anything -"

"Uh-huh."

"- I just think we just got into high school -"

"Right."

"- and we've only been not-really going out for a week -"

"One and a half."

"-and I want to take things at a slower pace because of what they did in mmmphf!"

Kuroko ended his babbling quite effectively, which was nice because by that point in their one-sided conversation Kagami had pretty much lost track of what he'd been saying. But evidently he'd said something right because Kuroko was kissing him. It wasn't fast or sloppy or chaste or any kind of category that Kagami couldn't remember any of his past kisses being (because he'd only ever had one), but it WAS good, and warm, and somehow sweet.

He felt Kuroko leaning against him and he reeled him in unconsciously so their bodies were aligned together. Then he dragged his hands up Kuroko's back and swallowed the noise of encouragement Kuroko made when his fingertips brushed the break of white skin above his basketball shorts. When Kagami dived his hand inside, tracing up that long spine, Kuroko hummed lowly.

He nuzzled the side of that face, feeling white-blue bangs stick briefly to his cheek, and breathed sharply into one ear. Kuroko made a grunt that might've been a laugh, so Kagami did it again and this time he smiled, because Kuroko was ticklish there. Then they went back to kissing for a while.

Finally, after Kagami felt like he'd been thoroughly loosened by all the tangible attention, Kuroko moved his head back a little to smile a little at him. "Seems to me when you get going, you move in the right direction," he murmured in the scant space between them. He reached one hand back and held Kagami's right where it had somehow gravitated to cupping Kuroko's ass.

Kagami let go as if he'd been burned and was both annoyed and embarrassed when Kuroko's smile went up a notch higher (which was pretty much Kuroko-ese for a full belly guffaw). "I just don't feel secure doing anything yet," he grumbled.

"Like sex?" Kuroko quipped.

"Yes! Geez..."

Under the glow of the night lamps something about Kuroko was soft and yellow and reminded Kagami of a full moon. But it could've just been Kuroko's good humor rubbing off on him. "I can wait, Kagami-kun."

"Thanks." His shoulders sagged in relief. Then a sudden thought struck him. "Does - does this mean that you...want to?"

He didn't think he could pass a test on Kuroko-ese just yet, but even so he thought he could detect something yearning and wanting in Kuroko's plain gaze. His voice only made Kagami's suspicions ring true: "Yes."

He stopped in the middle of the path. "Then we should -"

"Kagami-kun." And the returning taste of Kuroko on his lips was both thrilling, and calming. "I said I can wait." From that distance - or rather closeness - Kagami couldn't read a single shred of a lie in Kuroko's eyes.

A million things came to his tongue but the one he finally put voice to was, "I want to be what you want." It sounded traitorous to what he'd been saying earlier, but in that moment, he really meant it.

"I know. You are." Kuroko's eyes were wide with some unspoken promise that Kagami couldn't yet decipher. "So don't ever stop."

I don't mean to, he wanted to say, but in that moment Kuroko smiled faintly again, and Kagami knew he'd heard.
