A Long Day’s Night

Finally, we can get some sleep! We left LaVergne (Tennessee) at 9am, and just arrived here, after 10pm. I’m too exhausted to write much in the way of coherent commentary on the place, especially since I’ve only seen it after dark. But I do have a couple highlights from the drive…

The Appalachian Mountains are always beautiful this time of year, though it gets harder all the time to get a photo not marred by power lines and other signs of habitation by man. By the time we got into Virginia, the sun had set, fog was settling over the valleys and the full moon had risen.
And at our last stop for gas, I made an unexpected friend. This poor thing was trying to crawl its way across the parking lot. It showed no inclination to fly, perhaps due to the notch on its wing. I offered it a lift, and it seemed not to mind getting its picture taken. In fact, it willingly climbed onto my arm and settled in; it didn’t want to let go! Since it was kind enough to pose, I was kind as well, and placed it on a bush away from traffic. I didn’t think Luna moths were actually phosphorescent green; I was wrong!
