In Character Information

character name: Beyond Birthday (Real Name: Unknown, Aliases: Rue Ryuzaki, B, BB)
Fandom: Death Note : Another Note (The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases)
Timeline: Post-death
character's age: He's younger than L but older than Mello and company...so I'm guessing early to mid-twenties.

canon powers, skills, pets and equipment:
Beyond was born with shinigami eyes, the power to see people's real names and remaining life span. This ability is normally acquired when a human trades half of his or her own remaining life span to a shinigami. But Beyond Birthday had made no such trade. They were his from before birth, making him Beyond Birthday. For his entire life, Beyond saw death everywhere he looked. Which might explain his twisted personality.

He's extremely intelligent, a fact which led him to be taken in by Wammy's after his parent's deaths, to be trained as one of the first back-ups for L. Though that generation (A and B) was really just prototypes, from it he was trained in investigation and has high level skills in this area. He can think in the logical or the abstract and can solve puzzles as easily as he can create them. He's also displayed both a talent for speed reading and a nearly photographic memory. He can speak and read both English and Japanese fluently, and likely more languages on top of those.

The criminal in him has given him the ability to lie and be pretty good at it, or at least confusing enough that you're never quite sure with him. He's very skilled at acting, manipulation, and disguise as he used make-up to make himself resemble L (he fooled me) based only on what he'd heard about him. He can also steal cars.

non-canon powers:
Beyond Birthday will have his shinigami eyes, but they won't work quite as well as they did before. Some letters or numbers may appear blurred so that Beyond can't tell a person's real name and/or lifespan. This applies equally to Scorched or natives, making him unable to tell the difference between them. And yet other times he will be able to use them as "normally". (Normal use will apply only to NPCs and players who fill out a permission post.)

Beyond will also have x-ray vision. (Don't laugh.) Beyond will be able to see through walls, clothes, or even flesh itself to the organs and skeleton beneath. Because he's a freak, he would probably find this...fascinating.

Also, his burns would be healed.

canon history:
The media called them the Wara Ningyo Murders after the dolls that were nailed to the wall. L had taken an interest in the case, despite that there were under ten victims and less than a million dollars involved. The great detective recruited the help of Naomi Misora, who finds (or is found by) a strange man hiding under the bed at the first victim's residence. He introduces himself as Rue Ryuzaki: Detective. At least that's what it said on his little black business card. And he claimed to have been hired by the families of the victims to investigate murders that he actually committed.

The first appearance of Beyond Birthday isn't the beginning of his story though. It started with his birth, the first time he opened his eyes and saw the things that were probably meaningless to him at the time. He was born with shinigami eyes, the ability to see a human's real name and life span. His childhood definitely had some dark spots to it. Both parents died, his father attacked by a thug and his mother in a train crash, and Beyond knew that they were going to die. After their deaths, he ended up the second child to be taken in at Wammy's, House in Winchester, England. It wasn't exactly the most nurturing of places. His purpose there was to be little more than a copy of L. B was backup, just a few steps behind, naturally, A. These children were prototypes who were expected to fail. And they did just that. The pressure was ultimately too much for A, who ended up committing suicide. In May of 2002, B ran away from Wammy's and disappeared, eluding even L for a time.

And then he started killing people.

The first was Believe Bridesmaid. On July 31st, Beyond drugged and choked the freelance writer to death. But before this murder, Beyond sent a crossword puzzle to the LAPD. But it was an extremely difficult puzzle, one that no one was able to solve. No one except for L. The solution was Believe Bridesmaid's address, sent nine days prior to his murder. This was the beginning of the method to his madness. Nothing that Beyond did, from dates to dolls to locked rooms, was without a reason. He wiped away every fingerprint at each crime scene, right down to unscrewing the lightbulbs and wiping down the sockets. But there was just enough left (or missing, actually) at each crime scene to lead to the next victim. Oh, not if you were anyone ordinary. Only if you were L...or someone being guided by L.

Four days later, on August 4th, Beyond murdered a thirteen year old girl named Quarter Queen. He'd left her name spelled out at the first victim's home, but only for someone who could both discover and decipher the code. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the skull, a nicer way of saying that he bashed her in the head after drugging her. It was here that Beyond proved to be less than squeamish, even for a murderer. He poked the girls eye's out and crushed them after her death. He left behind three Wara Ningyo dolls nailed to the wall, one less than his first victim, one more than his third.

That third victim was Backyard Bottomslash, a victim of experimentation as well as murder. Beyond wanted to see if a human could die of internal hemorrhaging without rupturing organs or breaking the skin. So once Backyard was unconscious, Beyond Birthday tied her up and started beating her left arm until it was grotesquely bruised. When she didn't die, he took a knife to her, cutting off her right leg and left arm. Needless to say, she died from blood loss. The leg was left in the bathtub, but Beyond took the arm with him.

By the death of his third victim, Beyond had L's attention. And while L had recruited help in the form of Naomi Misora, an intelligent but suspended FBI agent, all it would take to finally beat L, to perpetrate a crime that even he could never solve, was one more death.

His own.

There seemed to be two possibilities for that final victim, two people and two rooms, but only one date -- August 22nd. It wasn't just L who had been guiding Misora, but Beyond as well. She was L's pawn, and (pardon the pun) if she arrived at a dead end when it was all said and done, so would he. Still playing the part of the unconventional investigator, "Rue Ryuzaki" sent her to one room to await the killer while he took the other.

A few more minutes, maybe even seconds and Beyond Birthday would've surpassed L. His legacy would've been the case that L could not solve. But at the last second Naomi Misora figured something out on her own -- the locked rooms and the dolls -- the murders had been perpetrated to make Beyond Birthday's suicide look like a murder as well, making him the final victim of a killer who could not be caught.

She arrived just in time to see Beyond Birthday in flames, after he'd doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire. But Misora put them out, both saving his life and placing him under arrest. The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases had been solved.

While serving time in prison, the serial killer Beyond Birthday suffered a mysterious heart attack and died. Go figure.

personality:
Beyond Birthday is abnormal. His appearance itself is strange with black hair and dark-rimmed, bulging eyes. Though tall, his back is curved, forcing him to look up at people who are actually shorter than he is. He also has a number of peculiar habits and postures, including nibbling at his thumbnail, and sitting like a child with his legs drawn up and arms around him. He has the ability to drop to all fours and crawl around like something out of a horror movie. He moves like a contortionist. Sometimes it's like he has no bones at all. He almost never blinks. And just pray you're never forced to witness his eating habits, utensils, or menu. It's a stomach-turning combination of his hands a jar of jam. Misora, who had the misfortune of spending enough time with him to know, described him as "creepy and pathetic" and went on to say that he was such a complete freak that she was surprised he hadn't committed suicide. But most of these abnormalities belonged to someone else first, borrowed as part of an act and so perfected that they're largely considered his own now. And that's pretty abnormal in itself.

But when you're a genius, a little eccentricity isn't just accepted, it's expected. He just comes by it a little more naturally than most. Beyond Birthday was born with the eyes of a shinigami, eyes that revealed a person's name and the date of their death just by looking at them. It is the ability to see death, and from the day he was born he was being constantly reminded that all humans would eventually die. And he knew the last times he would see his mother and father alive.

At times he can seem foolish, even childlike, but Beyond Birthday is a self-proclaimed top, and an aggressive one at that. He doesn't yield, and anything he takes on will be seen through to the very end in the most calculating and detached manner possible. He can be manipulative, making even intelligent people dance like puppets on strings. He is as deviant as he is brilliant, morbidly curious in his own way (such as the experiment he carried out on his third victim). He didn't choose to surpass L as a successor or a challenger, but as a criminal, and the worst kind at that. And yet while he is unabashedly a serial killer, someone who found it normal to kill people, he took certain precautions with his victims that show him to not be an unnecessarily cruel person. Beyond used his shinigami eyes to choose only victims who were destined to die on that day and he drugged his victims so that they would be unconscious before he killed them. He took no amusement in their deaths, nor was he willing to put much effort into the actual killing. The murders and his own planned suicide were to be a means to an end, his own way of beating L.

To his credit, he likes manga and strawberry jam.
