The updates are going flawlessly today.
I am really looking forward to the day. I made some significant breakthroughs on my new project yesterday. I have no more major obstacles in the way of this being a very successful job. The current procedure has a worker that spends about an hour writing down data from a chart hung on a cork board on the factory floor.
Then the worker types the written data to a spreadsheet, and continues for the next 7 hours processing the data to give a report to the boss roughly 24 hours after the data is really needed.
The new process will have the worker carrying a tablet PC to the floor, touching the digital equivalent to the paper on the tablet PC, and then hitting an update button.
The new process should take less than 30 minutes. The neat part is now by just touching the appropriate box on the pc screen, the date is entered, which causes the box to turn the color appropriate for the given day. Friday for example is yellow. Previously the recording worker has been changing the cell color manually. I cannot imagine a job where I had to color cells in Excel manually based on a date (day) consideration. Much easier to just touch it and have it change automatically!
The worker who does this currently is apparently not all that excited about the new process, although she will not be let go. She will just be given something else to do besides color little squares.
The cost savings of the project will more than pay for the touch screen tablet PC that we will need to add. If I could find a PDA that would run Access, that would be all we need.
Sorry to bore you with this stuff. Really quite exciting to me though!
Tonight is Movie night at Phoebe’s school. I have not seen the movie, so it should be a good night. I have to be at work at 5 tomorrow morning, so I hope it is not too late getting done.
