I didn't have anything to say about last week's episode, I honestly didn't find it all that interesting. Not horrible, but not great either. I do have some thoughts about the Power of Three though.
I enjoyed this episode! It was better than most of the other things Chris Chibnall has written (esp. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and the Silurian two-parter), and it might be my favorite this season so far. I just like the idea of seeing the Ponds' "real life" because, despite what Pond Life promised we haven't gotten much of that. I liked that we saw some consequences of always running off to have adventures, even if you have a time machine and come back to the exact same time. We used to get much more of that, but I'll take what I can get.
Other things I liked:
-Kate Stewart. She was clever, organized, and a great leader, plus a connection back to the classic series which we haven't had for awhile so that was cool.
-Amy and the Doctor sat down and had a conversation about the traveling and how it's affecting both of their lives! Yay! The Doctor talking about how he's always running to things before they fade away was great, especially as that pertains to Amy and Rory. I thought it was interesting that he felt attached to Amy because she was the "first face this face saw" mostly because it reminded me of Ten and Rose. I guess the Doctor does imprint on people after regenerating, lol.
-The cubes themselves were an interesting mystery. It reminded me a bit of Army of Ghosts. I liked that they were hard to figure out and how they all did different things (the chicken dance one was hilarious).
Things I didn't like:
-A whole year and no sign of River. I'm not River's biggest fan, but you'd think she'd drop in to see her parents/husband? They probably couldn't fit Alex into the schedule or something but a mention would have been nice.
-After all that saving the day was super easy- just pull out the sonic screwdriver! Okay. Also, what happened to the unconscious people on the ship? And, you know, why did the aliens collect them in the first place?
-The whole episode emphasized the importance of "real life" but then at the end Brian says, "Oh no, life with the Doctor is more important, you should make the most of this chance," and the Ponds go, "LOL okay" and run off with the Doctor again. I know they have to lead into the finale but that could have been handled better.
Random things:
-When the Doctor found the portal in the elevator and was skeptical, saying, "It's a bit cramped" I totally facepalmed. Doctor. Think about where you live.
-Whenever global episodes like this happen I always wonder what is going on with the other companions still living in this time. Especially Mickey and Martha, considering they have ties to UNIT even if they are technically freelancing now or whatever. Worldwide invasion and Martha doesn't try to call the Doctor? I know it's not feasible as part of the actual episode b/c the show has moved on, but in-universe it's something to think about.
That's about it. Looking forward to next week! (Hopefully they will address the fact that Rory keeps coming back to life, it's their last chance after all.)
