Asylum of the Daleks

Hello, LJ! It's that time again! Spoilers for Doctor Who below.

Well, that was unexpected! I was pleasantly surprised by the introduction of Oswin, thought we were going to have to wait for Christmas for the new companion, but NOPE! Except she's a Dalek and might have just been blown up. Um. Not sure how we are going to get past that but okay. (Please don't let that be her actual death and the Doctor's travels with her occur before that somehow because we've already done that with River. I know Moffat likes reusing plots so I am kind of worried about that, but she didn't seem to remember him so maybe we're okay.)

I did like that they addressed some of Amy and Rory's problems, and it was a great scene, talking about their respective love for each other. But I don't think it was quite enough. It feels like the problem came out of nowhere and was resolved almost as suddenly. The writers had a great opportunity to develop the problem in Pond Life: what if, instead of an Ood, the Doctor had accidentally dropped off an alien child on their doorstep? We could have had some fun gags with that, but we could have also seen Rory playing with the kid, and Amy looking upset because she couldn't give him that future. Heck, we could have had River stop by, and addressed some of the Pond's regrets of not being able to raise their only child properly. Any number of things could have been used to develop the rift that the desire for children had caused in their relationship, but we didn't really get much. And yeah, I'm disappointed by that.

Still. Oswin was fun, I wasn't expecting her to be a Dalek, and I wasn't expecting all the Daleks to lose their memories of the Doctor. That could be interesting, we'll just have to wait and see!
