happy mother's day!

Happy mother's day to all moms, grandmas, godmothers, future moms and all mom-like ones!!!

I got breakfast in bed this morning. It was a peanut butter sandwich, an apple and a huge glass of milk. I got presents also - a flower plant that had never actually sprouted & so replaced with a construction paper flower with a picture of Caroline's face in it, several home-made cards - one with Steffi's handprints, and a small construction paper box decorated with hearts and I-love-yous. Then the best part, snuggling with my two little girls. What a great way to start mother's day.

We went to McDonald's for lunch at 12:00 and we didn't leave until 3:00. It was the first time I let the kids play as long as they wanted. Several of their classmates came & left. After 2 hours we had ice cream. The bottoms of the girls' feet turned black (they were apparently cleaning in inside of the play place with their socks). I sipped diet Coke and read a couple chapters of The Da Vinci Code. (OK book, not great but not requiring much brain engagement, either, so it was ok.) Finally, they admitted they were pretty tired, though they never actually agreed it was time to go.

I went to church this morning - made it barely in time. We had a family emergency just before time to leave.

Santa Claus broke his leg. Actually, it got amputated!

The three-foot tall, flat wooden Santa that Stephanie loves enough to have married several times, has been getting more & more warped. Stephanie told me through sniffles and rolling tears that she was just trying to straighted out his leg and it came OFF. I assured her that it could be fixed but she didn't quite believe me. Fortunately, just then Papa came in and told her that he would take it to the shop and fix it. She believes Papa about fixing stuff!!

I did make it to church in time (barely). The Sunday school room looks great - pale yellow mousse colored walls and bright white trim. Looks wonderful, sunny and inviting. All it needs now is new carpet (hopefully I can order this week). I bought some small Veggie Tales plaques and sturdy books. I threw out every nasty old toy, the dusty brownish books and broken bits of crayon and the worn out chalkboard. It's close to being done and it has perked up the whole church.

I gave the Pastor "Life of Pi" to read and he told me today that he is with Pi in the middle of the ocean and the ship went down. He did not seem to love the book and looked at me a little bit reproachfully. I said it's a very hopeful book but you have to get through some bad stuff. He looked even more skeptical. I said, "Well, at least I didn't give you Faulkner to read like I did to my brother!" I am not even done with my Bachelor's degree and I am already giving assigned reading, telling people stuff is good for them even if they don't like it. I have already been thinking about teaching Comp I and II after I get my master's. It is great to have so much to look forward to!! 30 people who have to buy the book I tell them to buy!! THE POWER!!!

One of my classmates last term got offended because he asked me to critique one of his papers and I took out a red pen and immediately started slashing. He said he appreciated my input but not the red ink - he was laughing but I think the message was serious! I forgot to ask him what color would've made the criticism more palatable. . .

Stephanie just came to me crying, she says she hates school because it is too boring and she doesn't want to go to her daddy's house. I am not sure which one she was really crying about. Maybe it's that tomorrow is Monday of a week where Friday means a trip to Miami. I just said it was ok to cry if she wanted to.
