Fannish Excitement

I haven't posted forever and ever, and so much has gone on that if I don't give myself a clean slate, I'll never post again, and that would be terrible!  (Uh, nice sentence, Emily).

So I'm stealing this meme from the lovely osprey_archer because it looks like all kinds of fun.  Also because babbling on about fandoms is pretty much all I've been doing recently ( Read more... )

1. My favourite character and how i FEEEEL about them: Mary. She's horrible and upperclass and SO spoiled and completely bitchy at times, but oh how I adore her. She knows exactly what her place is and what society owes her (or so she things) and she will make damn sure she gets it. She's a lot like the Dowager Countess (which I don't think either of them like to acknowledge). And I just love that she allows herself to be exactly as she is. You take it or you leave it.
2. The character i never expected to love this much: Matthew. Edith. Mrs. Hughes. Mr. Carson
3. The character everyone else loves that i don't: Well, I'd say Bates, but...
4. The character i love that no one else does: Edith!
5. My absolute most favourite pairing EVER: Matthew/Mary. Sybil/Tom (which I would like better if they didn't have that weird "on hold in the garage" thing last season)
6. The immensely popular pairing that i just don't get/like: I'm not sure what are popular pairings! I used to love Anna/Bates but pretty much the second they got married ( ... )

These are all almost the answers I would give! And #11! This needs to happen.

I kept meaning to do research for the Peace Conference story, and then I didn't get around to it, and then I was like, "If I'm going to do THAT MUCH RESEARCH I should write something original about the period." But then I, you know, didn't. Anyway, I approve all the Sybil/Branson AU's of non-terribleness.

I may at least have to write about the terrible social novel Branson wrote during those 4 years he was just hanging around in the garage.

HA! I wasn't meaning to poke you about it! Just that the AU is so firmly entrenched in my head now because it's so brilliant.

Oh, Tom. And you know he got his hands on English translations of Hugo & Zola so it's this weird amalgamation of Dickens/Hugo/the French Naturalists with lots of Marxist theory thrown in. Possibly he should stick to being a journalist (and not a revolutionary cause wow, bad at it).

Oh, I didn't take it that way, the comments just reminded me!

Now I really wish someone who has read 'Les Mis' would do a 'Branson reads Les Mis story.' This could totally go in the Branson & Sybil book club 'verse, and they are passing the same volume back and forth so they can read it a chapter at a time. In a modern AU they are HUGE Les Mis groupies.

Oh good! I reread it and thought it could have sounded that way and flailed.

Branson & Sybil passing the same book back and forth to read it a chapter at a time is my new favorite image ever. And since i'm in the middle of a Les Mis reread, I may have to poke at this.

With Les Mis that might actually take four years.

Best fanwank yet for Branson's holding pattern in the garage: He was going to go join the revolution in Ireland as soon as he found out what happened to Jean Valjean.

I love Edith too! Rampant Edith love! And also Mary: in an odd way I love how entitled she is, and how bitter and brittle when life doesn't treat her as she wants it to.

AND YOUR AU IDEA IS THE BEST EVER.

It is totally not MY idea, but one I appropriated from likadeuce because IT IS PERFECT. (Also Paris Peace Conference COME TO ME, AMAZING TIME OF HISTORY.)

And oh Edith so much. Poor girl getting compared to her sisters so much that she's pretty much decided that's all she is. It's not like she's been educated enough for anything else, and she keeps trying SO HARD to find something meaningful and it keeps getting thrown in her face! Ugh, I love her.

Would love Sybil/Branson recs if you have any! I know I read some (I think I read ALL the 'Branson apologizes for insulting Sybil's work fics, because that should have been on the show, dammit) but not an enormous amount overall.

I'll poke back through stuff and see if I can find! (I am TERRIBLE at keeping fics at hand though because apparently I look at fics with an"if you let them go, they will come back to you" attitude. It's annoying when they DON'T.)

And that should have been on the show. The entire second season should have been different. I can deal with the third mostly, but the second season is terribleness.

I generally liked season 3 except for the Sybil parts (and Bates in prison but I think everybody just collectively decided to ignore that storyline). Season 2 is SO FRUSTRATING though.

Season 2 is so incredibly annoying. I wonder if Fellowes just got so caught up in S1's success that he never sat down to write? Or - it's World War One! How do you have a show about a British manor house during World War I NOT be wonderful? The plot lines basically write themselves.

...and maybe I've just figured out why it wasn't all that wonderful if Fellowes thought that way too.
