let's see how much i can write in ten minutes, eh?
first week of field school is over; i helped sketch a section profile of a buried wall, we did surface collection on two compounds, i did some survey on the side of the mountain looking for batons, or big ass grinding stones that are still silky smooth from having corn ground on them 1500 years ago...i climbed a mountain four days in a row and didn't die, although it's pretty easy to kill yourself on the "path" up to the site because it's something that i would only loosely call a trail (i'll post a picture if i ever get to use the lab house laptop). we saw the huaca de la luna, which is amazing and beautiful and so much more than the pictures of it you can find on the internet OH MY GOD, pictures of that too...also saturday we went to a tiny village called ciudad de dios that sits underneath one of billman's excavation sites from a few years ago. we walked up a dirt road through sugar cane that was at least twice as tall as i am, and they fed us traditional peruvian food and made my professor dance with them to peruvian music, and the children ran around begging us to take their pictures and then show them to them because digital cameras are magic in a village with very little electricity...and we didn't get to play soccer with them but we did help them pick up trash in the streets and took as many pictures of them as we could.
and, i spent all day yesterday drinking and looking at the pacific ocean, and then woke up today to work in the lab from 8 until 4 like a true archaeologist. we still haven't excavated anything because peru takes its time with permits, but in the meantime there's still plenty of work to do. and i love ALL of it. even climbing mountains. i love it. and i love struggling through conversations in spanish and i love huanchaco and i love south america. and i love you guys.
but i may never come home. i'll keep you posted. (=
