My husband inherited a pretty clock from his grandparents, which we've had in storage for years waiting to get it serviced and hung up. Today the clock guys came and installed it in the dining room, right outside my workroom.
IT'S TICKING!!!!!!!!! O_O
How did I forget ticking? Garh!
my tragic existence

I was raised with ticking clocks so I don't mind them. After my mother died, I inherited her lovely mantel clock... which ticks. My husband forbade my using it, because the ticking DRIVES HIM INSANE. Whereas, since I was raised with it, I found it quietly pleasant and only really noticed the clock when it (a) chimed the quarter-hours, or (b) fell silent altogether.
ETA: Needless to say, when my dad died, I did NOT bring home his gorgeous grandfather clock, but sold it :-(

(omg the clock bongs! I mean, I knew it, but at 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 a.m. I really knew it, hah. It's so courteous, it bongs the hour, then a minute later it bongs it again in case you missed it. Luckily the bell is just sitting atop the clock and can easily be taken off. Poor clock, it's like a houseguest who's a little too big for all the chairs and hasn't quite got the hang of the place yet!)

(I just tried taking a little nap and I could hear the ticking in the bedroom, oh boy. Can I find a sock drawer big enough to hold this clock, I wonder?)

I actually like the sound of a ticking clock, but it's a bit spooky at night when you're alone. Can you...muffle it somehow??

I've been eyeballing the clock for a way to muffle it, but nothing's suggested itself yet. It's a kind of clock that's all metal, so there's no wood to absorb the noise. Maybe I could knit it a sweater!
(I think I'm going to give it a week and if I'm still noticing it I'll have them come back and relocate it to the other end of the apartment. A little drywall patching is a small price to pay for my sanity, right?)
