I need an icon that looks like this: O_O

Dec 07, 2011 16:23

My husband inherited a pretty clock from his grandparents, which we've had in storage for years waiting to get it serviced and hung up. Today the clock guys came and installed it in the dining room, right outside my workroom.

IT'S TICKING!!!!!!!!! O_O

How did I forget ticking? Garh!

my tragic existence

That reminds me that my white noise phone app, which I love and use all the time, has a "clock" setting. Which always makes me go, WHYYY?

Is it, at least, the kind of ticking that might eventually become reassuring and even soothing?

I was raised with ticking clocks so I don't mind them. After my mother died, I inherited her lovely mantel clock... which ticks. My husband forbade my using it, because the ticking DRIVES HIM INSANE. Whereas, since I was raised with it, I found it quietly pleasant and only really noticed the clock when it (a) chimed the quarter-hours, or (b) fell silent altogether.

ETA: Needless to say, when my dad died, I did NOT bring home his gorgeous grandfather clock, but sold it :-(

My husband has fond memories of this ticking from napping on his grandparents' sofa as a kid. I'm pretty sure we had ticking clocks too at some point, but, oof, definitely not used to it now. I had a choice of two places to hang it and when the first proved too tricky (masonry + old lathe behind the wall, anchors wouldn't work) I blithely chose plan B, which, oops, puts it 10 feet from my office door. Shit! I know I can have them come back and do plan C (same place as plan A, but do Whatever Is Necessary to find the stud in that insane wall), I just (a) feel silly being so neurotic about it, and (b) don't relish dealing with filling a bunch of holes ( ... )

Yes, I'm realising now that the table runner (extended doily) that my mother had under her mantel clock may not have been purely for decoration...

Now I'm imagining someone picking up the runner and bundling it around the clock at night, like a kid in a huge scarf. :D

(omg the clock bongs! I mean, I knew it, but at 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 a.m. I really knew it, hah. It's so courteous, it bongs the hour, then a minute later it bongs it again in case you missed it. Luckily the bell is just sitting atop the clock and can easily be taken off. Poor clock, it's like a houseguest who's a little too big for all the chairs and hasn't quite got the hang of the place yet!)

Alas, I have been in the same situation. I made Mr. Bamboo bury his watch in his sock drawer every night. It was a relief to both of us when the battery died and he decided just to use his phone.

Hee! I think I know that watch--my husband had one that ticked loudly enough for me to hear it, but only when we were sleeping somewhere really quiet. Unfortunately that doesn't include our bedroom at home. You must live somewhere more peaceful. :)

(I just tried taking a little nap and I could hear the ticking in the bedroom, oh boy. Can I find a sock drawer big enough to hold this clock, I wonder?)

Have you seen the Doctor Who episode "Girl in the Fireplace"? >:)

I actually like the sound of a ticking clock, but it's a bit spooky at night when you're alone. Can you...muffle it somehow??

I have seen that episode! Clockwork things are so creepy, eeeeeee. /o\

I've been eyeballing the clock for a way to muffle it, but nothing's suggested itself yet. It's a kind of clock that's all metal, so there's no wood to absorb the noise. Maybe I could knit it a sweater!

(I think I'm going to give it a week and if I'm still noticing it I'll have them come back and relocate it to the other end of the apartment. A little drywall patching is a small price to pay for my sanity, right?)
