I need an icon that looks like this: O_O

My husband inherited a pretty clock from his grandparents, which we've had in storage for years waiting to get it serviced and hung up. Today the clock guys came and installed it in the dining room, right outside my workroom.

IT'S TICKING!!!!!!!!! O_O

How did I forget ticking? Garh!

my tragic existence

My husband has fond memories of this ticking from napping on his grandparents' sofa as a kid. I'm pretty sure we had ticking clocks too at some point, but, oof, definitely not used to it now. I had a choice of two places to hang it and when the first proved too tricky (masonry + old lathe behind the wall, anchors wouldn't work) I blithely chose plan B, which, oops, puts it 10 feet from my office door. Shit! I know I can have them come back and do plan C (same place as plan A, but do Whatever Is Necessary to find the stud in that insane wall), I just (a) feel silly being so neurotic about it, and (b) don't relish dealing with filling a bunch of holes.

(The bong on this clock is like a fire bell if you don't muffle it, too. There's tape on the bell to quiet it and it still sounds like it's calling people to church. Also! It chimes the hour twice, once on the hour and once a minute after, just in case you missed it, hah!)

It's sad that there aren't so many places where a noisy clock fits into our lives these days. I blame small apartments and the fact that after 1910 we stopped upholstering every household surface. A few plush mohair tablecloths and wall-sized tapestry hangings would absorb that sound pronto!

Yes, I'm realising now that the table runner (extended doily) that my mother had under her mantel clock may not have been purely for decoration...

Now I'm imagining someone picking up the runner and bundling it around the clock at night, like a kid in a huge scarf. :D

(omg the clock bongs! I mean, I knew it, but at 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 a.m. I really knew it, hah. It's so courteous, it bongs the hour, then a minute later it bongs it again in case you missed it. Luckily the bell is just sitting atop the clock and can easily be taken off. Poor clock, it's like a houseguest who's a little too big for all the chairs and hasn't quite got the hang of the place yet!)

Sounds to me like your clock may need to be relocated to the other end of the apartment... ideally your neighbour's apartment :-P
