hello world.
I am frequently absent, but have decided that I should give myself more of a lasting imprint on the world. I spent three hours today getting tutorials on how to use the UCLA archives and special collections. Oh, in case I didn't note, I am getting my MA in Cinema and Media Studies from UCLA. It is week 2 in my first quarter. All of this talk about archival research made me think about the footprint I am leaving and what information people may or may not find useful later in life.
Perhaps this is a good time to play catch up, just for the sake of marking where I am in my life and what I am doing.
-I have a boyfriend. His name is Mike. We have been dating for about six months.
-I am living at home with my father so as to not have to pay rent during my 2 to possibly 7 years at UCLA.
-We re did my room. It has a ceiling fan in it.
-I wish I hadn't been so quick to decide I was over living in Indiana. In retrospect, two years in their MA program might have done me some good. I was just over my undergrad life there. It is easy to get sick of people when you are living with them and their living habits aren't compatible with yours.
-I graduated college in 3 years. I am the youngest person in my program. Some days I feel like it.
- I am interested in fan studies and production/consumption culture as it pertains to contemporary American film and television. I like geek culture.
courses are as follows
FTV 206C American Film History
FTV 200 Research Methodologies and Bibliographies
FTV 495 TA training
FTV 292A Producers Program: How To Run A Network
The classes rock, but I feel like this program still isn't going to be nearly as specialized as I would have hope. The quality of student is everything I had hoped for however. We are all scared, well except for a couple of people who seem like they have it all-together, but even so, they only seem like it to me, for all I know they are freaking out on the inside.
I am doing a Genre project with a classmate named Jim. I outed myself as a big geek and pop culture advocate the first day of class and he agreed to work with me as we try to make a compelling argument for Superhero to be a genre of film instead of a sub-genre of Action/Adventure and noting that it is not always Graphic Cinema.
I hope to do my final project on Who Framed Roger Rabbit as a critique of the Golden Age of Hollywood, or perhaps in terms of genre, or any other number of things.
So far my life is going well. Thanks to said boyfriend, I have taken up Argentine Tango and the Society for Creative Anachronism, however both are on pause due to the adjustment to being back in school. Also, I have discovered how much I like to sleep and need to sleep to be functional and full of thoughts worth the price I am paying for my education, and that turns out to be a lot, so it dampers my social calendar.
Also there is the TV season, which is overwhelming. Shows I currently watch weekly are
Monday: Heroes, House, Greek, Gossip Girl, Big Bang Theory, Castle
Tuesday: SYTYCD
Wednesday: Glee, SYTYCD
Thursday: Bones, Fringe, Project Runway
Friday: Dollhouse
I am not quite sure who is left out there to read this in the world of LJ. It is hard to know who follows anything anymore, since my life has switched over to Facebook and in part Twitter.
Thank you world, and hopefully it won't be too long till I write again.
