Some background informationI've seen conservative bloggers ranting about how wrong it is for the liberals to "lionize" George Tiller and declare him a hero, when what he really was is a murderer ( Read more... )

Abortions are sad, but a necessary medical procedure in some cases. I always find it so hypocritical how some people can be so opposed to it while still being against measures that can prevent cases where abortion is an alternative (better birth control).

To the people whom Tiller helped, he was undoubtedly a hero. Late term abortions are not done for fun, as some might believe. But a self aware human being should always be given priority over a fetus, especially when continuing the pregnancy has a severe risk. I think people are too preoccupied with their own sense of morals to see how the world works. At times, you can't save everyone. But people like Tiller did what he could, which is important during times when many people ride their high horses without seeing the consequences of denying women the right to decide over their own health, like patients do.
As you stated, informing a patient before a medical procedure is the law. And that information has to be unbiased and explained in a manner that the patient can understand. That is the duty of the patient's health care providers.

Like any woman would be happy over choosing such a procedure in the first place... I think these assholes should stop attempting to make them feel worse. And I can hardly see any health care provider wanting to specialize in something like this for their own sick amusement. They do it because there are patients who need their help.

It's even more impressive when you look into his history and see how it all happened.

His father secretly performed abortions back when it was illegal; he started after a patient of his died after he refused to perform an abortion on her.

Tiller took over the business after both his parents died in a plane crash. He could easily have gone into another specialty and been safe and financially comfortable, but he chose this because he knew that women needed his help.

That's some storybook heroing there.
