So, in some fit of truly unprecedented idiocy, I managed to lose my glasses Sunday night.

Yes, those glasses I have to wear ALL THE TIME because I am so very nearsighted and would be squinting miserably at blurry everything otherwise. I went to the store to get pasta for a pasta salad, and somewhere between walking out of the house and in the door of the supermarket, my glasses disappeared. I was wearing my dark glasses at the time, so all I can think is that my normal glasses fell out of my purse when I pulled my shopping bag out, or something. I don't know. I couldn't fins them in the parking lot when I went back, and calling Safeway to pester them about lost and found has been fruitless.

Luckily I had my old pair of glasses tucked away in my dresser, so I'm not reduced to wearing my dark glasses around all the time as an alternative to running into things and being unable to read the computer screen. It's still annoying, though - I was planning on getting new glasses later this month, and I wanted to keep my (now lost) pair as a backup, because the prescription was still pretty good, and now I can't. I can't, and the glasses I'm wearing now are close to four years old, heavy, don't fit right any more, and leave me with constant, low-grade eyestrain. Also, the lenses are the cheap plastic, which is just yellow-tinted enough to annoy me, and I get weird reflections off the inner surfaces of the lens. It's giving me a real appreciation for the high-index plastic I had in my lost glasses and my dark glasses. Oh how I miss you, clear, crisp vision...

Also luckily, I was able to call my opticians and get my appointment moved up to tomorrow morning. I like my opticians. They are very nice, and in walking distance of my house. Now I just have to hope I can get the lens processing expedited somehow, because I would like to not wait 2-3 weeks for decent glasses.

In other news, there was a family get together yesterday, with my mother's family. I brought Jake, pasta salad chock full of fresh tomatoes from my garden, and Sparks. ^_~ We introduced Sparks to Bertie, my aunt and uncle's dog. (Named after Bertie Wooster, of course, and the name suits him - he's very sweet, eager to please, and a little bit of a blockhead.) Bertie and Sparks got along pretty well: a little initial growling, but no biting or aggression. Bertie was mostly confused and curious, and possibly a little worried about this little fluffy thing that was stealing all his attention. Sparks got cooed at by all my aunts and uncles and cousins, and passed from lap to lap.

My father and I spent some time talking about backpacking in Finland, which he is tentatively thinking about for late next summer. I expressed much enthusiasm, because this sounds like lots and lots of fun, and a good excuse to go gallivanting across Europe. Who knows, if it pans out I might even get Jake to go to Ireland and meet the one uncle he hasn't met yet. Anyway, the idea has me thinking about high-performance sleeping bags and backpacking air mattresses and high-tech tents and many other expensive but fun camping gadgets. Whee, fun!

All in all, a nice day, aside from the horribly hot drive.

Now I think I may roust the sleeping puppy from her bed by my chair, and go see about cleaning our room a bit. the top of one of the dressers has got a bit out of hand. We'll see how long this cleaning jag lasts...
