An email from the Dropkick Murphys showed up in my inbox this morning, in which they said, "The Dropkick Murphys would like to take a moment to acknowledge the struggles of the working people of Wisconsin and to pledge our support and solidarity..." and then went on to announce the early release of one of the songs from their new album (a union ditty, of course) and that they're releasing a limited edition t-shirt, the proceeds of which will benefit the Wisconsin Workers' Rights Emergency Response Fund.
I really want it. It's all red and it's got propaganda-style art on it!
It's certainly not surprising, given that the band are all members of the Musician's Union, and sing plenty of union organization songs, but always nice to see people you admire hold to their principles.
I know that state governments all over struggling to balance budgets and make ends meet, but I don't think going after unions is the way to do it. Unions keep workers from all walks of life from getting completely shafted, and I think they're important - even if they do sometimes get too powerful or too political.
