Wabbits: slightly crazy

Feb 03, 2011 21:32

So yeah. It's that time of the month... when I go from baking extra-chocolaty macadamia nut cookies to being positively gleeful over finding the IMFDB: Internet Movie Firearms Database. GAH. And then watching youtube clips of people firing guns with suppressors.

Given that it should not surprise anyone that my sister and I are planning to have a sisterly bonding moment by getting our father to bring out the Remington 7mm magnum. The Sister Person already got to shoot it - I am cheerfully envious. (She says the recoil knocked her back about eight inches. This sounds fun!) She's better at badgering my father about these things than I was - I only ever got him to get out the .22 rifle and the pistol. After that there's only the shotgun, but I'm not so keen to try that one: when I asked about it he said something like "the last time I fired it it didn't explode," which is not exactly a ringing endorsement when it comes to firearms. (The shotgun in question belonged to one of my great grandfathers, I believe.) Anyway. If I can keep all the 7mm shots on-target, I will be keeping up with my sister. ;D

This reminds me that I need to make a sheath for my hunting knife. Should probably make sheaths for my siblings' knives, too. I have this sneaking suspicion that if I don't make a sheath, I'm going to cut my fingers off someday.

As far as I can tell, hitting other players with your hurley (big ashwood stick) is not actually a foul in hurling. There's no rules about how high you can swing the hurley, and players don't wear any padding. The only mandatory protective gear is a minimal helmet, and even that wasn't mandatory until 2010 (definitely wasn't mandatory last time I was in Ireland - the Awesome Irish Cousins said that most professional players didn't wear helmets.) Their uniforms are only marginally more modest than those worn by footie players, and the sport has a 3000 year history. Hockey can go kiss off, hurling is the original blood sport.

Galway Hookers are bloody gorgeous boats. Look at them! *sigh* I remembered them being pretty, but I don't think I was quite as much of a boat nut last time I was in Ireland. Their lines are so pretty! Look at those curves! (Amusing note: I've seen part of the regatta mentioned in that picture's caption. We were at the coral beach in Carraroe when boats just started going by!) It's like they took a trading boat and made it sexy. Which is essentially what happened, since Hookers are transport boats (peat and lime and manure, how glamorous) built along lines influenced by Viking boats (sexiest boats ever, hands down, no competition.) Plus the red sails are just gorgeous against the ocean and the clouds. I wonder if I could cadge a ride on the cousins' friends' Hooker next time I go to Ireland? Hmm. Knowing the rudiments of sailing would be useful for Author Things. ^_~

We apologise for the scattershot nature of this post - it's a fairly accurate reflection of my brain, at the moment.

Jake and I watched the first three episodes of Level E last night - it's this season's sci-fi comedy anime. It's actually quite amusing! The two main characters are kind of tailor-made to fit my interests: the guy is a former delinquent baseball player who likes kittens, and the girl plays video games, as well as being able to spot hidden cameras and stuff like that because her dad is a government scientist. And they can actually interact like real humans. The guy thinks she's cute, but they just hang out like friends, instead of turning into tongue-tied blithering MORONS. I may be bitter about anime. Just maybe. Anyway. I'm cheerfully optimistic about this series.

Looks like the Sister Person and I are making pecan tart and a cheesecake with a praline crust for the parental units' birthdays. Wheee! I am looking forward to this.

Sometimes I feel like an incredibly boring person, and then I get the urge to go do something drastic like getting a tattoo or taking flight lessons. I blame this in part on my father, who has done enough crazy/dangerous/unusual things for several lifetimes. Nearly run out of fuel while lost and flying alone over the Canadian wilderness? Check. Been arrested by the Soviet police behind the Iron Curtain? Check. Hitchhiked across the US? Check. Hitchhiked from former Czechoslovakia to Istanbul? Check. And the list goes on and on. It's kind of ridiculous. Meanwhile I am a housewife, but that is an entry all to itself, and one that I will ignore for the moment.

On to happier things! I get to hang out with BOTH my siblings this weekend! This is making me very cheerful. ^____^ I feel like it's been a long time since I've seen them both at the same time, but it probably really hasn't been that long.

I think I need more tylenol, and possibly tea. Unfortunately I am out of instant cocoa. I'll take this as the universe's sign to me that I need to stop writing this entry and go do something productive.
