Last night I had an experience that broke my heart and made me extremely thankful for what I have. I live in Denver and was downtown off 16th Street, my father and I had just finished our dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. I had my leftover cheesecake with me, which I was sure would turn into a science experiment once I get it home. We walk out and are discussing what to do next when a woman approached us. "Great, what's her sob story" I think to myself. She starts off "Sorry folks, I don't mean to be persumptious...." at this I steel myself and I'm fingering a dollar of quarters in my pocket as I'm awaiting the inevitable story of wanting spare change that I hear many times on the 16th Street Mall. She continues on "but are those your leftovers?"
"What the HELL?!?!?" I think to myself. My heart stopped beating for a moment as my brain processes what she just asked.
"You see we're homeless, and the shelter won't let me in with my dog" at this I notice the huge friendly white fluffy dog next to her. "So I was wondering if we could have your leftovers?"
Now bear in mind, I have NEVER in my 36 years of life been asked for half eaten food. At this the only thing that went through my head was "that which you do to the least of these, you do to me" out of the Bible. So I did what I thought was right and with tears springing forth in my eyes and my heart in my throat, I handed her my cheesecake. I hope she enjoyed it as much as I did.
