For those of you that don't already know, I'm a vegetarian, and have been for almost a year now. For most people, that would seem like a difficult decision to make. For me, it was one of the easiest, as well as one of the best. As I grew older, I tried to eat healthier, and, considering that I love good, healthy food, the switch was fairly easy. However, getting my family - especially my grandmother, whom I currently live with - to understand why I made the decision to stop eating meat was much harder. I think she's finally beginning to accept it, though.
Recently, I decided to take steps towards becoming a vegan - that is, cutting out all animal products. I knew that this would be harder, as I do like my dairy products - milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream, etc., so I knew that, unlike my becoming vegetarian, this was not a switch that I could make overnight. I decided that I would give myself up until my thirtieth birthday to make the switch. (I'm twenty-six now.)
I was sure of myself and my plan...until a little while ago. I was searching for information about vegan children on the internet (because I want to raise my children vegan as well - when I have children, that is) and stumbled upon an article about the horrors of factory farming. I'd heard of it, and there was a video attached, entitled Meet Your Meat, so, curious, I clicked on it...and couldn't believe my eyes. It was like watching a horror movie...only this was all too real. Before I was halfway through the video, I was sitting here, tears rolling down my face, angry at the way the animals were being treated. I doubt I'll ever forget those images....and maybe that's a good thing. Because of that video, I WILL go vegan as soon as possible.
I'm going to add a link to the video and hope that it will actually show up. If you watch it and it moves you like it did me, please tell others about it, as I plan to do the same. No animal deserves to be treated the way the animals in this video are.
