'My eyebrow did raise when he came out with the "he's my friend" line. They haven't build much of a rapport on the show proper... You weren't the only one who did the eyebrow raise. I like to think that Cas loves Sam because Dean loves Sam and Cas is learning how to become more human through Dean. I'm willing to handwave the lack of Sam/Cas interaction away that they interact off screen; why else would Cas look for them in Changing Channels after only being missing a few day if they didn't spend a lot time together.
'And wee!John was SO GOOD as Michael (and as John, mind you, but as Michael he really rocked my socks!)' He did, didn't he. He did a great job with the dual role. I kind of like that he did not only Cas' head tilting thing but also Gabe's finger snapping thing.
