Birthday stuff

1. THANK YOU (thank y'all!) for the birthday wishes. My mumbledy-mumbletieth (older than dirt) birthday has been really good so far. I didn't get much in the way of presents (Season 2 of How I Met Your Mother and a small check from my dad and ETA a Ghirardelli dark chocolate and raspberry bar from DD) but that's okay; at my age, who needs a lot more possessions, y'know? I realized that in the many years I've belonged to my church, I had probably never celebrated my birthday with those folks. I'd mentioned my birthday but never celebrated it. So today On the way to church I picked up a small (quarter-sheet), simple cake from the bakery at my supermarket and brought it to church. During Joys and Concerns, at the beginning of the service, I announced that today was my birthday and I'd brought a cake. The service (more later) was wonderful and afterward I think people took more than 30 of the 40 pieces I'd cut.

The service was very interesting. Art Shegonee, a Native American dancer of the Potawatomi and Menominee Nations, talked to us about some native customs, danced for us, and led us in a two-step circle dance. I got pulled from the crowd to be one of the circle dancers and it was a lot of fun. Then after the dancing, Art said, "Is there someone here with a birthday?" and everyone said, "ANNE!" So then Art said some nice things to me (sort of a blessing) and everyone sang Happy Birthday. Here's a photo of Art in his dance regalia (not from today). He made the costume himself, with help from his daughter; the pants and overshirt are made from elk hide. That suit looks like it weighs at least 30 lb. No wonder he calls his form of dancing "Indian aerobics" :)

Tonight, Mr. Annearchy, DD and I are going out for dinner. I usually cook on Sundays but this year I refused to cook on my birthday. I should figure out where I want to go:)

2. Yesterday was okay. The best thing was watching Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy (!!). Eddie Izzard (!!!!) and some other people I didn't recognize in VALKYRIE, which was pretty good. The worst thing was going to donate blood late in the a.m. and then discovering the blood simply didn't want to come out, and leaving with a weird bruise in my elbow that looks like the vein is popping out of my arm. So after 1.5 hours of semi-torture, I left without having a real donation. At least they gave me the cookies and Sunny D.

Hope everyone is having a great day!! Thanks again *smooches you all*
