April 18th

1. Today's a big anniversary day. It's the 100th anniversary of the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. It's also the anniversary of Paul Revere's ride..."on the 18th of April in (17)75, hardly a man is now alive who remembers that famous day and year"... Actually I doubt if anyone is still alive who remembers the earthquake, unless it's someone who was maybe 4 years old at the time.

2. On the subject of natural disasters, here's an article on San Francisco's lessons for New Orleans.

3. On the subject of news reporting, I'm thrilled that the New Orleans Times-Picayune won 2 Pulitzer Prizes for its Katrina coverage. You really need to read this story. The staff went to Herculean lengths to continue publishing (albeit mostly electronically for the first 6 weeks) after Hurricane Katrina hit. It's efforts like this that make me proud to have a BA in journalism, even though I've never been a newspaper reporter.

4. Maya's new hamster now has a name: Sir Hamsalot. *shrugs* No idea why. Who knows what lurks in the minds of 4th graders?? I should be glad he's not Sir Fartsalot.
