Car-free for a day

Sep 27, 2005 09:21

That's car-free, not carefree. Here in the City of Madness, a "car-free challenge" is going on for 2 weeks. They want you to try to use your car less. I didn't sign up for it but yesterday I realized that I really did NOT need to drive today, because Maya has a day off from school and is home with Mr. Annearchy, who works from home (let's hear it for home-based businesses, yay). So I decided I would take the bus to and from work today. I could take it every day but it's at inconvenient times and I wouldn't have a way to pick Maya up from her afterschool - I could get there by bus, but I don't think there's a bus nearby that would get us from the Tae Kwon Do place to our neighborhood.

So...I got up at 6:00 a.m. and hustled through my usual morning routine much faster than usual, knowing that I had to catch a bus 2 1/2 blocks away at 7:10 a.m. Bus came on time, I settled in to read my little contemporary romance novel ("Afterglow" by Catherine Coulter, which is just okay), and 10 minutes into the bus ride, my stomach was rumbling. WTF??! Then I realized I'd forgotten to eat breakfast *headdesk* I usually eat breakfast around 7:30, when Maya gets up, then I race through brushing my teeth etc. and fly out the door around 7:50 a.m. So getting out of the house so early made me forgot about half of my morning routine... And yesterday I got a check for about $350 for reimbursement of some dental expenses, and of course I realized as I got off the bus that I'd forgotten to bring the check with me so I could put it in the credit union. I hope the rest of the day goes better than the beginning. However, I did treat myself to a nice "breakfast skillet" and OJ from the coffee shop here, figuring that if I had to miss breakfast at home (which was only cereal anyway) I should at least enjoy breakfast at work :D

And now another meme...
