Have another review of Doctor Who - The Power Of Three.
[spoilers naturally, also lots of words] First I gotta say that I really dislike all the time-jumps this season. IMO everything feels disjointed and it's really really hard for me to connect, attach or give a shit about anything that's going on. The jumps are so abrupt and we are told (and in some cases shown glimpses of) what happens in between but that doesn't do anything for me except tell me what happened. SHOW ME! Why should I care if it's not even important enough for me to experience it with the Doctor? Don't get me wrong, it's okay every now and then but this is getting ridiculous. Like someone said on Tumblr - like we're just catching glimpses of this Tardis team and not running with the Doctor. This whole episode could've been an entire season storyarc, so many things were jumbled in.
An episode of Earth!!!11!! HOW I MISSED THESE! All the news bits and the famous cameos really reminded me of RTD era. They really went all out with pop cultural references in this ep didn't they. :D I also loved the insight into Ponds domestic life (something that I hoped the mini-eps would actually be about) and I like that they like their life and jobs and stuff. I am happy for the Ponds finally brushing off the Doctor and calling him out on his shitty time schedule (even if it was a one-time thing and then they completely change their minds again). Also, Eleven's chat with Rory's dad is appreciated ("Not them, never them." famous last words Doctor). LOL @ Amy's parents not being there again. Apparently no1curr about them anymore. Speaking of Amy, she went from being a kiss-o-gram to a perfumist (sp?) to a model to a... travel journalist? IDK I can't make sense of her career choices. Nor do I care that much. We never saw those choices reflected/mentioned in any of the episodes before in any kind of way tbh, so they don't really matter to me - it's just something she does. Unlike with Rory, who at least used his nursing skills at one point or another. *shrug*
As for Earth - which Earth is this? What year is it? At least approximately? Did Doomsday happen for this Earth - with the Daleks and the Cybermen? Do they know that aliens exist? I hate not knowing this. At least UNIT is still there (and that was a lovely thing they did to honor the Brig - I didn't really watch classic!Who but I appreciate the importance of the character). I kept wondering how Martha and Mickey and Gwen must be freaking out about the cubes. XD
It was a bit hard for me to believe the Doctor is THAT impatient but OK, I rolled with it. There were a few funny scenes there. :D But leaving Rory's dad for four days in the Tardis without anyone remembering him or noticing? W/E Same goes for the creepy child in the hospital - absolutely no one noticed her sitting/standing there for months probably?? Come on.
The mystery of the cubes had me for a while there but the resolution felt weak I guess? What was the villains motivation for wanting to destroy all of humanity? Do humans do something in the far of future that these Shakri (sp?) want to prevent? Why go to all this trouble? And then everything gets resolved in a matter of two minutes and a few flashes with the sonic. A bit underwhelming tbh. Why were those two werid looking dudes in nurse robes kidnapping people anyway? Was this explained in the episode because I missed it. Since the Doctor never really cought the bad guy we might meet them again in the other half of s7 and this will be mentioned and explained further? Not holding my breath though. I liked the mention of Gallifrey and their legends, that was a nice touch.
I also found it hard to believe no one cleaned up the cubes. Like locally. They just left them where they appeared? Even in the tray with forks and spoons and stuff like that? And all around Paris just laying around... for a whole year?
This is the episode where we get the famous - leaving the cell phone in Henry the 8th bedroom - thing. Also, Amy seems to be wearing the same or very similar clothes from DOAS. Could be the Doctor really is going backwards with the Ponds. Coz we really need more convoluted timey-wimey-ness. Didn't get enough of that last season. :|
Apparently now Amy can call the Doctor on the phone?
I really enjoyed the serious talk Amy and the Doctor had. And his explanation of why he keeps coming back to them is cute albeit sorta selfish. But that's ok. Eleven has a douchey side, we all know this. XD
ETA - omg sister just watched the episode and it turns out Eleven, Amy and Rory just saved Rory's dad and left all those other people on the ship TO DIE! And no one gave a single fuck. LOLLL They didn't even chech to see if they're alive or dead or what. Didn't even ask why the fuck those people were there for. LMAO I can't with this show! :D :D :D
