Only the walls are still standing, the roof taken away by the last tornadoes and the windows crushed in millions of glinting shards. Above, the sky breaks every time a lightning strikes and cold drops of rain fall. The Man Upstairs has come down, on Earth, watching it descent in nothingness. It’s a last home, the others are destroyed.
The fall of his children wears him down. His eyes are tired, the purest blue clouded with a wish for slumber, but also blank from the anticipation. He feels the change of air and turns to face The Reaper, suddenly feeling lighter than he ever did. A feather in the wind, a leaf on the water. His creations. The rain grows heavier ,the last purifying veil the Universe wears.
-Took you long enough.
-I’m deeply sorry if I made God himself wait .I was busy.
-What, Eve was in a hurry?
-No. The line at McDonald’s was too long.
-Hmm, hungry?
-I’d kill for a hamburger.
They chuckle. Two friends ,older than time, older than anything, together for one last time. God speaks , no regrets in his voice.
-It’s time .
Death’s scythe flashes in the light .It stops raining.
