I've seen three summer movies so far, which is more movies than I normally see in a six-month period, if not a year sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love movies - but weekends are always so busy, the prices are ginormous, the theater audiences mostly annoying, and there's rarely anything playing that I couldn't wait to see until it comes to pay cable. But this year I'm feeling it - the need for pure mindless escapism, that is, more than ever before.
Anyway, movies crossed off the list include Thor (awesomesauce), X-Men: First Class (certainly better than the first three, which I somehow managed to see even though I'm SO not a fan), and this past weekend we saw Super 8 which was heavy on the cliche, alternately predictably Spielberg and Abrams, and yet was purely entertaining enough that we enjoyed it.
This weekend we might see Green Lantern, unless the reviews are truly wretched - or we could save that one for a week or two when everyone is fighting to see another Transformers movie (when will Michael Bay ever retire?!? Oy vey). I'd also like to see Bridesmaids, but I'll probably have to wait until that one hits HBO.
There are at least two more summer movies that are Must Sees: Cowboys and Aliens tops the list because it looks seriously awesomesauce, plus Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford together FTW!; and Captain America with which I have a love/hate thing happening. On the one hand, it looks like it could end up being the best of the Avengers flicks. OTOH, I hate that it looks so good because I really wanted Jensen to go out for this movie and not have to give up the chance due to his Supernatural commitment. I mean, Jensen Ackles IS Captain America. Dammit. Plus, after that, an Avengers movie directed by Joss Whedon! *sigh*
I'm dead serious, I think his agent should have pushed Jensen to go for the role and Sera should have been honest and admit she wasn't going to do a blessed thing with "Dean" all year anyway except stick Jensen on screen to fulfill the strictest parameters of his contract. Such a wasted opportunity, because if he got the role it would have been easy enough to temporarily release him for however long it took to shoot a movie, like other shows do, and bring him back in when he was done. Yes, it's less disruption to do it like Olivia Wilde did this past season with House, for instance, when the actor is part of a larger ensemble cast. But, really, given as superfluous as Dean was this year, as paint-by-numbers redundant as the season turned out to be anyway, and given that everyone knows neither Dean nor the actor who plays him is Sera's favorite besides, would anything have changed much if Dean Winchester stayed "retired" off screen for the first month or two? I can't imagine.
However, I can and will imagine Jensen in the role of Captain America the entire time I'm watching the film on the big screen.
Speaking of movies,
I really have to read this book now because the potential cast line-up is already sucking me into the film rights! And I know we have the book somewhere in this house - both The Girl Child and The Boy have read it.
Besides seeing Super 8, I spent a couple days in Gainesville this past weekend to visit with
vala3, which was nice and hopefully a boost for her {{hug}}, and got to see
momcat09,
sporangia, and most of the rest of the gang as well as TGC. I also got a chance to visit
The Harn Museum and the department where TGC is interning this summer. And on the same movie theme,
vala3 and I watched The King's Speech on blu-ray Friday night since neither of us ever got out to see the film when it was playing in the theater.
Did the Gainesville crowd manage to get to the movies on Sunday - and if so, what was the verdict? Super 8 or Bridesmaids? ;)
Oh, and hey, Gainesville buds, I hope you gals who complain so loudly about our few cold snaps are much happier now that the temps are in the brutal trip-digits with no rain and the state is literally on fire. Hot enough for you? *ugh*! ;D
