Reiterating a comment I posted to Val's LJ this morning, but if Frontierland was evidence of the kind of show I had watched all season long, I wouldn't have been praying for the stupid thing to be canceled. Up to now, I'm sorry, but Supernatural hasn't deserved a renewal order, as far as I'm concerned.
But then they pull out an episode like this that proves if allowed free rein to write the kind of episode they're actually good at, the show sings. This is what the show can do when it cares about ALL its characters, including DEAN Winchester, and when it genuinely gives a damn about balance in story line and not more about feeding personal fetishes.
This episode was like the direct opposite of almost every other episode they've produced this year. To use a Seinfeld'ism - Stick to the opposite!
I haven't felt this happy after watching an episode of Supernatural in longer than I can remember. And I haven't seen Jensen Ackles this much in his element, this enthusiastic, since those BTS pictures and vids of him directing at the beginning of the season. It was just nice to see him really enjoying being an actor on this show again.
Plus, we finally got some insight into a couple of story lines that might very well have been interesting had Gamble not wasted the entire year spinning her wheels in one tired overused direction. It's just a shame that there aren't enough episodes left to do any of those story lines justice. But if we can at the very least keep these characters for the rest of the season, that would be a minuscule step in the right direction.
More after I watch the episode again about a dozen more times. I'm just happy to actually want to watch an episode of Supernatural more than once (if even once). Yee-haw! ;D
