I like that most of you have been busy/lazy, whatever, lately. I mean, I'm sure it has a lot to do with the holiday week for a lot of folks here in the States of Disunion (sorry, but I don't think we have a lot to celebrate these days). Vacas and the whatnot. Still, I don't feel so guilty ignoring my LJ when everyone else is taking a break too. ;)
Our July 4th was very low key, even though The Spousal Unit took the week off. We didn't go anywhere, just hung about, got stuff done, did some shopping and, yeah, lazed around. The best part is that The Boy's been gone since Thursday on a camping trip and won't be back until tomorrow - and having him out of the house for four days is a vacation unto itself.**
We did manage to see Live Free or Die Hard last week, which we enjoyed almost as much as the original Die Hard. Two thumbs up! I do not, however, have any desire to see Transformers. ;) I am mortified to admit that I never got my ass out to see Spiderman 3. I don't know what the hell happened there - I should have gone with The Spousal Unit and Girl Child when they went to see it opening week, and I don't even remember why I didn't at the time. But I thought I'd get out to see it the next week, and never did, and now it's gone. *ack*! All good intentions to see Ocean's 13 also passed me by, though I could still squeeze in a showing if I managed to get out some time this week - but that's not very likely. I don't know where my head has been this summer.
So, as one of the silly few US fans left in the world who are watching Doctor Who as it began airing Friday on the Sci Fi channel, I was all primed and pumped for the new season to start - until all the articles at
metafandom starting popping up a few days before the US premiere. I didn't want to let those opinions influence my enjoyment of the series, and I wanted to keep an open mind about certain aspects that were being discussed. And for the most part I really enjoyed both episodes, Runaway Bride and Smith and Jones, on their own merit.
For starters, I don't yet see the racism aspect that has been the subject of much of the discussion at
metafandom lately - but, of course, we've only just been introduced to Martha here, who I think is marvelous. Then again, I think anyone who is not Rose would be a breath of fresh air, because I'm one of those fans who thought it was WAY past time for a new Companion. I'd become over-tired of the Lana-Langing shtick of Rose Tyler long before the end of series two. Granted, unlike Kristin Kreuk who should be manning a Clinique counter and not starring in a TV show, Billie Piper can act; but the writing for the character had become, IMO, every bit as insufferable as it is for one Pink Power Ranger on Smallville.
But that's neither here nor there. Rose is gone. Companions, like Doctors, come and go and have come and gone for the entire tenure of this series. That's the way it works. That's the way it's always worked. So first we're introduced to Donna for an episode, and she would have worked out perfectly fine, I thought; and then we got Martha, who is gorgeous and actually has skills and an education that could come in handy, and that's even more impressive. I'm sold. Seems like a good match to me. :)
However, what I'm NOT sold on is that The Doctor is going to mope and whine and kvetch about Rose Tyler to every new potential Companion in every fucking episode like she was the goddamn end-all-be-all of Companions. *insert eye-roll here* Excuse me???? Puh-Lease! I'm sorry, The Doctor does not do this. This is not the way it works. And if RTD is going to continue to have Ten whine and cry about Rose the rest of the season, that is going to sour me on this Doctor, which is a shame because I really like this Doctor. Or, at least, I did. But if this is the way he's going to behave the rest of the season, then IMO, Companions are not the problem - it's time for another Doctor. And another producer who isn't obsessed with Billie Piper - who, if I'm not mistaken, originally wanted out of her contract when Eccleston left anyway. Bored now with the fucking Rose worship.
Other than that, I loved the episodes.
Burn Notice has quickly become one of my favorite new summer series. I'd almost forgotten just how delicious Jeffrey Donovan was, and I think I like him even better here than in Touching Evil (which needs to come out on dvd ASAP!).
Though I hate that the producers felt they had to change Fi's character already by dumping the Irish accent and replacing it with such a nondescript accent that I can't even tell what she's supposed to sound like. She's supposed to be ex-IRA, and I thought the Irish accent was perfect for her and didn't make her sound like a "friggin leprechaun". I guess someone at USA didn't like it after they saw the Pilot. *grrrr* Anyway, that's my only nit. Loving everything else so far. :)
New Eureka and Psych this week! This is why I can't keep up with the summer movies. There's too many summer TV series to keep track of.
I also snagged a copy of Slings and Arrows, Season Three at Barnes and Noble on Friday. Yay, me! I was going to order it online, but with my B&N discount card, plus an extra 15% coupon I had, I got the dvd for same price
ezust put me onto it at
deepdiscount.com. Woo-hoo!
**Oh, no, vaca is over! The Boy came back tonight! It seems he discovered that camping out in the open air with the bugs and the oppressive heat and the bears who wander into camp every night isn't all it's cracked up to be. I think he missed the a/c and indoor plumbing. Ah, well, it was nice for us while it lasted.
