mostly for my own benefit, sorry if you're not interested!
drexel
+ philadelphia (i love the city, not so expensive to live in, lots of opportunities in terms of libraries/museums/historical preservation etc.)
+ ranked #11 (respectable, but doesn't seem to be ultra-competitive)
+ concentrations (Information/Library Services, Competitive Intelligence, Archival Management)
+ dual-degree option
- private = expensive
+ possibility of getting a full-time job at the university & getting free tuition that way?
pittsburgh
+ pittsburgh (again cool city, reasonable cost of living, presence of museums/libraries/etc.)
+ ranked #7 (a little higher, but not TOP)
+
CATHEDRAL OF LEARNING omg
- not as many specializations
- $14,154 per term
- have heard (but only from one person) that they have basically no money to give as aid
+ good basketball team haha
pratt
+ new york (so many libraries and museums and internship opportunies, plus i could probably get trish's mom to hook me up with great experience since she is a librarian at the met)
- new york (um, COST OF LIVING omg)
+ heavy focus on arts/humanities
+ "international librarianship" program (summer at UCL!)
- private = expensive
- no assistantships until second year
illinois
- champaign (college town, not as many opportunities etc.)
+/- champaign (only a train ride into chicago, which is doable and would give me more options)
+ $9,630 per semester
+i've heard they really take care of out-of-state kids with scholarships etc.
- can't apply for assistantships until after admitted/accepted
+ sports! (i know this is not a good reason, but i totally missed out on the whole college sports thing by going to emory and i wouldn't mind having it)
michigan
- ann arbor
- $15,370 per semester
+ i actually know people who have gone to this school, and they all seemed to love it
+ one person told me that aid/assistantships are not so difficult to get
- one person told me that focus is more on information science than librarianship, another told me this doesn't matter but i'm still uncertain
+ my mom will be really happy if i go there, it's her alma mater
so i'm thinking i will definitely apply to the first four, possibly the fifth as well. sigh.
