life is different here in Troy, New York. Whenever I visit I am often reminded of this. Some of the differences make me wish I never left this part of the country. Tonight my cousin Kristin and I shared beers on a dock on the Hudson river at sunset.
Some of the differences make me so thankful that I moved to Denver and got a chance to experience so much culture... so much of the world. Kristin and I were at a bar in downtown Troy this evening and she was introducing me to everyone she knew as her cousin from Denver. One of the bartenders at a particular bar told me that he was from Laramie, Wyoming. I made a comment about the murder of Matthew Shepard and the bouncer said, "yeah... he deserved that". I asked him if he was serious and he said yes. He went off about how he thought Matthew was just some stupid homo who had it coming. I could not believe my ears. I went off on one of my rampages, flipped him off and stormed out of the bar. This part of me only comes out when I'm here in New York. I guess that's why I call it New York Beth. I don't apologize though. I find it riduculous that someone would try to justify such a brutal crime. I'm sorry to Matthew too.
I also got into a big political argument with someone who I think my cousin went home with. Oops. I normally like to keep myself in check but if you tell me that you're not going to vote for Obama because his middle name is Hussein like Sadaam... I'll call you out as an uneducated asshole.
I did have a lovely time tonight though. I've been around here enough that people recognize me and call me "Colorado". It's sweet. Kristin and I danced all night. Sometimes being in Troy is such a surreal experience though. Around two thirty we were ready to leave the bar so a Troy police car drives by and Kristing calls him over and he gives us a ride to Grandma's house. I can't imagine being in Denver and asking a cop to drive me home. It's the things like that that make me appreciate this town.
I have also decided that Grandma Martie's house is haunted.
