Character Name: Canada (Madeline Williams) Character Series: Hetalia Character Age: Anywhere from 500ish years old to 143, depending on when you start considering the land 'Canada' For these purposes, she is a little less than 500 years old. She appears to be around 19 or 20 physically.
AU Background: Since this is merely an AU where Canada was female, Canada's basic history never changed. The difference came in how she perceived it and how she personally related to the major players in her time as a nation. Like the male Canada, she was a loner nation for much of her early life. Her only interactions were with the nations who controlled her and they were often in and out of her life in brief flashes. She barely remembers her time with the Dutch and her self-awareness began with France. The woman was her mentor for a long time, the kind but stern mistress of her life. As with many colonies, her relationship with her governing nation was at times strained, but France always held a special place to her. The woman taught to read and write and was a heavy influence for nearly 200 years

Of course, peace with the rest of the world was one thing and peace within her own self was another. For like across the ocean, British and French clashed within her. Her people had many arguments and battles over the ideas America had brought, a democratic government that was "responsible" to the colonists and not the British monarchy or legislature. She had headaches time and time again as the rebellions lifted and were squashed. She agreed with them in principle, that her colonists should have a government closer to home, but she knew she could not win against England at this time. Life progressed with constant bumps in the road, but in 1867, she was given control of her own affairs with the Confederation and became known as the Dominion of Canada. However, Britain still kept control over her external affairs and as Canada was still uncertain about dealing with America, and the disputes between where their borders lay, she was content with this. Her lands expanded over time and despite the bumps and bruises she gained with every

The single worst event Canada can recall was watching Quebec try to leave her. The urge to grab her province and shake her, tell her that this a family that will not be broken, was hard to ignore and even now, she watches Quebec ponder independence.
Since the inventions of mobile phones and the growth of the internet, Canada has made far more friends, both humans and nations, and likes to keep in touch with them more often.
Personality: Canada doesn't tend to make a big first impression. Quiet around strangers, kind, thoughtful, but ultimately forgettable. She has 'that quiet girl' written all over her and she does not mind giving others that idea. Canada would rather be vaguely remembered in a good way than vividly recalled in a bad one. When you meet again though, she will remember you. Centuries of being overlooked made her sensitive to such things and she will recall the names, faces, and often birthday and holidays of nearly all her acquaintances

To be honest, France's quiet lessons when she was a small child stick with her more. It's the reason she defaults to writing in French, as it was France who taught her, and it is why she will go France for advice if she needs it. For all England was her keeper, the guardian who essentially raised her into who she is now, France is like her mother, or more realistically a grandmother, who swoops in every once in a while, showers her with love and needless well-meaning comments and swoops back out. She will always be there for Canada, even if Canada does things she does not approve and Canada loves her for it

All in all, she prefers the smaller children more. Their wide-eyed innocence or grinning mischievousness reminds her of quieter days and she will happily play and listen to their troubles. She has the remarkable ability to sit and answer a child's questions one after the other as they babble on and on, and will without skipping a beat ask them right back. Her ability to listen for hours on end was certainly cultivated from an early age, as she listened to America talk and England read. Her favorite thing to do even to this day is listen to someone read. It takes her back to being curled up in bed beside America, comforter up to their chins, fire banked high against the cold

She can in fact fight, having helped England out in several wars. It's left her with a good shot and distaste for the battlefield. Her military is small but fierce, and she adores them and takes great pride in them. She'd often tuck up her hair and bind her chest to battle with them. She was not caught as a woman when it would have been disastrous, even if her persona 'Matthew Williams' caught a bit of teasing for looking effeminate, and now she might not even bother to cross dress. Like nearly all nations, it strikes her heartless to ask them to fight but not fight herself. Her worst memories involve killing a group of soldiers and having to finish off one at close range or let him bleed to death. It made her queasy and uneasy with the whole idea of what she was fighting for and she wept to herself that night. She still got up the next morning and kept going because even if her brave young men could do this, so could she. Her trials in the first World War gave her confidence and a clearer, less quiet voice, and her time in the second

Sample Entry:Canada's not scared of heights. She's been hiking up mountains and stood at the peak, watching the world. Heights are not the problem. The fear of falling is the real issue, she decides as she stares out the window at the tower walls--and monsters beneath, and she turns back to the man in charge of this silly job
