I get that it's funny sometimes the way Danny is with his emotions and how much he cares for Steve. But don't you think equating a gay man with the role of "the wife" is sexist and homophobic? You're basically saying Danny behaves like a stereotypical woman and considering you're depicting him as a gay man, you're got a double whammy there.

I don't think it's sexist and homophobic at all, especially with a person like me writing it. I joke around with the "wife" term because everyone's always teasing them in the show. I definitely don't consider Danny feminine in any way, and I find him a strong character.
This fic is more about Steve being able to open up to a longtime friend, tell him "Hey, I'm in a relationship and I'm happy." Doubly more relieving for him when his friend accepts that because his friend is part of the military, a longtime conservative institution on the subject of same-sex relationships.
I'm definitely sorry if this came off as offensive in any way relating to sexuality or gender identity. I know from my own fights against discrimination and prejudice that it's not something that can just be taken lightly, which is why I certainly didn't mean it this way. This was an important junction for Steve, and that's all I wanted to show.
If you want to talk more about it definitely go ahead and message me and we can talk it over, or if you have any more

I don't know you, I only know what you wrote, so who you are doesn't really give me any information. Fine, you didn't mean to write something that reduces marriage to husband+wife, which in the real world is not longer the case in more than a few place and which shows your bias regarding the kind of relationship termed "marriage".

The conservatism of the military, the SEALs and Don't Ask, Don't Tell isn't very well conveyed when you make a point of making fun of the relationship and making it palatable for those who would only be able to see Steve with someone who is "like a girlfriend" or "a wife" as you wrote. It's sexist to call someone the wife, regardless of your intent, because you reduce his entire character to that stereotype of womanhood. It's homophobic, because the only way to make a same sex couple palatable is by making sure we know who the "man" and who the "woman" is, basically invalidating the homosexuality of the relationship.

Well, I'm sorry you feel that way then.
The only reason the word "wife" is even used in this story is because of Chin and Kono's line in the beginning. It's a play on everyone believing they're married. Like Lori when she joins Five-0. I do not say that Danny is a woman, and neither does anyone else in the story. Bram and Murray do not understand that Danny is a man in the beginning because of the joke. They get it after. Thus the use of quotation around the word when they talk. Steve uses the word because he's trying to use levity in his conversation with Murray, and Murray let's him know that he is one hundred percent okay with Steve being in a relationship with another man. It is very clearly not making fun of a relationship. I apologize if it has come off as otherwise. There are quotes used around certain words to convey a specific tone by the characters for this very effect.

Thank you very much for your comment. I think that's always an important part of this dynamic too; to show that not everyone associated with the military is overly conservative or homophobic. I was so excited when I campaigned against DADT and was able to see it repealed because I actively believe that the DADT repeal actually causes a team or squad to function better, and more companionably. Trust is important when your job has the risks that it does in the military.
And Steve's just a great guy at any rate :)
Thanks again for your comment!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I found it hilariously funny; the classic Danny rants, the teasing by Chin and Kono, and the way the guys bust Steve's ass.
I actually found the banter between the military team members to be quite realistic. Guys being guys and all that. When they joke and tease each other, they don't worry about 'political correctness' (and I should know.) In fact, in my 12 years in the Navy, I had constantly heard much worse.
These particular SeALS knew each other and it was obvious that their joking was all in fun.
I liked how Steve managed to confide in Murray and that Murray was cool.
Nice work!

Thank you for reading and commenting! And thank you for your service! My brother's been in the Navy about seven years now and I definitely get what you mean about guys being guys and all, lol.

Thanks really enjoyed, great take on Steve and Danny's dynamic. The wife/married couple is woven so much into the show by it's writers, and this is a great take on how Steve would break it to a fellow SEAL and friend. And Danny's brief appearance was so in character, talking a million miles an hour, arm waving, the concerned-exasperated-I am going to kill you for putting your life in danger again! 'Steven' then the stopping abruptly and leaving.
Didn't see any stereotypical woman or gay man.
Good job, will be back for more.
