From the lovely mikomichan

Comment on this post with the word SPARTACUS and I will choose six interests from your profile. You will then explain what they mean/why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

1. Mister Rogers Mr. Rogers was not only a local from my favorite city in the world, but he was everything I think of in a hero. That persona he put out on TV of being gentle and caring was every bit true off camera. For a post-modern world, where anything genuine is considered about as real as unicorns, Mr. Rogers was a miracle. Now that I have a young daughter, my affection and admiration for Mr. Rogers has only grown larger. He truly cared about each and every person he came in contact with: each and every one. And despite coming from privilege and being a very religious man, he never got involved in the culture wars and never mentioned any particular religion on the show because he believed that God loves you exactly as you are. And I want to believe that too.

2. Porphyria I was born with a rare blood disorder called Erythropoetic protoporphyria which is in a family of blood disorders called Porphyrias. The whole branch is divided into two different forms, cutaneous (meaning skin) and acute (meaning sudden). Mine is a cutaneous form, which means I get sick from stuff relating to my skin, specifically exposure to sunlight. When I was younger this caused a whole host of problems for me including bullying, near constant pain 8 months of the year, and psychological damage from being labelled a hypochondriac. Now that I'm older, have an actual diagnosis, have people in my life who support and love me, and have gotten better at managing my illness within my life, Life has vastly improved.

3. Studio Ghibli For those who have never seen a Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki film...GO NOW! His stuff is wonderful. Most of the movies are meant for kids, but nearly all of them remove the dynamic of good guy vs evil guy, and establish conflict in much more natural and true to life ways. They also hit all my feminist buttons in that Miyazaki shares a trait with other artists like Joss Whedon, in that he loves powerful female characters.

4. Shounen Zanzou Shounen Zanzou was a one shot comic written by the author of Angel Sanctuary, Kaori Yuki. It's about a serial killer who targets female prostitutes, and is discovered by a young male prostitute, who they then proceed to fall in love and then is eventually murdered (drawn out double suicide?) by said serial killer. It's full on imagery and is just this side of star crossed lovers, something...Either way I ate it up during my goth years. Hahaha

5. Utada Hikaru I like J-pop, but I really don't like how high pitched most J-pop singers voices go. I also have a weird tick about English words in songs that aren't pronounced even remotely correct. In comes Utada Hikaru. She sings a whole lot lower than most female J-pop singers, and also being raised part of her life in America, flawless at any and all English. It's also kind of refreshing to get more of an East coast accent too. Many of the English speakers in Japan have West coast accents. I know, weird tick.

6. Astronomy I still and have always had a science bug, though recently it's more shifted into medical and child-rearing related science, but during college when I last updated these interests, my science bug was more related to outer space related pursuits. Astronomy still peaks my interests just in how totally fascinating it is and that we are still learning and discovering new things. In the past when I felt overwhelmed, I would look outside at the stars and enjoy the insignificance feeling I would get, because as small as I would feel in relation to the vastness of the universe, my problems would feel even smaller. I haven't done it recently thanks in part to having much more support in my life, and also living in the city and light pollution. But yey. Space!
