The call to standardize gamepad button layouts.

Almost all of my gaming these days is done on the Xbox 360 (Halo 3, Puzzle Quest, Blue Dragon and Bomberman Live) or the Nintendo DS (Picross DS, Etrian Odyssey, and Phantom Hourglass). MS even took the colors from the Super Famicom face buttons and had the nerve to rearrange them as it saw fit. Jerks.

I've got to say, though, that I hate the L1/L2/R1/R2 notation with a passion. You'd think by now that I'd be able to tell which was which in a pinch, but you'd be wrong.

LT and LB, and RT and RB? No problems. ^_^

You have my sympathy... I have the exactly same problem with my PS2 and DS. The PS2's 'enter' button is the 'x', which is on the bottom, while the DS's A button is on the left.

Would you care to start a petition for your grand suggestion?
