Chapter 2: Untitled

A few days passed while they settled before Harry remembered Dumbledore's letter, and when he finished reading he was not sure if it would have been better to have forgotten about it. The contents went against his well established hatred of the 'greasy git'. They portrayed a man with unquestionable loyalty not only to Albus Dumbledore, but to Harry himself. The young Gryffindor had always wanted to know why the Headmaster trusted Snape so much, and in that letter he found out. The Potions Master had changed sides a few months after Lily Potter and Alice Longbottom had conceived their first children.

Snape witnessed the Prophesy -all of it- and told only the beginning to the Dark Lord when he was still a loyal Death Eater. He was a Slytherin through and through so he always kept some things to himself that he could use later to his advantage, the rest of the Prophesy being an excellent bargaining tool. Nothing would have changed and he would have remained a loyal Death Eater if his Master had not targeted children, unborn ones at that.

The Potions Master was not a man with strict morals or scruples, but even he drew the line of what he was willing to do for the Dark Lord at something, and for him it was pregnant women and little children. He had never participated in torture session that involved those two, and his reluctance had not ingratiated him to the Dark Lord, but he was firm on his convictions, and willing to die for them. His Master realized that, and unwilling to loose who was his most brilliant follower, he allowed Snape his ‘eccentricity’ as he called it. The young Potions Master knew there was no way out of the Death Eaters ranks, except for ending in Azkaban or dead. Snape chose Azkaban and surrendered to Albus Dumbledore's mercy.

Instead of going to Azkaban, Dumbledore asked him if he was willing to become their spy. They had unsuccessfully tried to infiltrate Voldemort’s ranks, and Severus was not only already inside, he was also a member of the elite ‘Inner Circle’. Providing them with information was a better way to atone for all the wrongs he had committed, even if to keep his cover Snape had to commit more brutal acts or make more cruel torture or killing potions.

Snape was given a second chance and the old wizard only requested two Unbreakable Vows -where he agreed to protect and be loyal to the children- and a loyalty oath. The Vows were to be made to the infants the Prophesy affected -once they were born- and the oath was to Albus himself. The Longbottoms did not agree, and neither did James Potter, but Lily Potter did not share her husband’s prejudices and accepted on her son’s behalf. She was aware of how skilled Snape was and that he would be a powerful protector for her son. She had let Severus Vows without her husband's consent. Those were the reasons why Dumbledore trusted him blindly, if at any time Snape betrayed his vows the Potions Master would have died.

The young Slytherin had made many mistakes during his life, and he probably would keep making them as long as he could draw breath, it was only human nature after all. One of them had been to get 'involved' with Narcissa Malfoy for a few years. While Severus was sure he had not been 'in love' -Merlin forbid- he had been very 'in lust' with the blond beauty. He might pretend to be cold and unfeeling, but underneath he was still a man made of flesh and blood, and he was not about to refuse Narcissa if she decided to look past his ugly mug, what man in his right mind would? Besides, he always had a soft spot for her. Severus really had a hard time saying no to Mrs. Malfoy, and for once in his life he should have.

The previous summer Snape had entered another Vow without being completely certain what he was agreeing to do, except that he had to protect Draco Malfoy, and to finish the mission the Dark Lord ordered him to undertake if the boy was not able to complete it. Narcissa feared her son might die trying, and that it was the way the Dark Lord chose to punish her husband for his utter failure in obtaining the Prophesy and loosing most of the inner circle's Death Eaters. Snape saw no way to refuse, and so he made the Vow. Only later did he discover that the Slytherin's mission was to kill Hogwarts' Headmaster.

The Potions Professor had been willing to trade his life for that of his mentor without even batting an eyelid. He simply did not want to kill him. He had not counted on Dumbledore's stubbornness, and the fact that the old wizard was already dying. So Albus had drawn a plan to make his death worthwhile. He knew Snape would gain an enviable position of trust by being the one that dispatched the leader of the Order of the Phoenix, and they would be in a position to keep Draco Malfoy from having to commit murder. It was Albus belief that the boy could still be redeemed; Snape did not share that belief. The new status should allow the Potions Master to be informed of most of the planning and raids, as well as the identity of all of the Death Eaters. He just had to wait for his contact to send word so he could begin transmitting what he knew.

That contact was Harry, and the medium of communication was Fawkes. What the Headmaster was requiring of him was more than the young wizard was willing to do. He had hated Snape almost since their first meeting, and it was the older wizard's fault. Now Harry wasn't sure he could put aside that hatred to work together with the person he considered his school nemesis, and one that occupied the fourth place on his 'to-kill-slowly-and-painfully' list. Hermione was the one that helped him put everything into perspective with the help of one of the pensieves, as well as some of Dumbledore's memories. In the end the dour man began earning Harry's respect and he agreed to work with him. He would act as liaison between the spy and the Order.
