Chapter 1: Background
Harry Potter was finally going to get what he longed for, a quiet peaceful life away from the press and the hubbub of being the-man-who-kicked Voldemort’s-arse. It had been a year since the final battle at Hogwarts, and the Ministry -still under Rufus Scrimgeour’s leadership- had been picking up the pieces of the Wizarding community in Great Britain. Harry destroyed all but one of the Horcruxes Voldemort created, including the one on his forehead, and Severus Snape took care of Nagini. So killing the Dark Lord using Gryffindor’s sword was what won them the war. The battle was a bloody carnage and Harry lost all of those he loved that had been still alive.
Ron had been the first to die after Dumbledore, on august 1st 1996. To the red head's eternal shame, it was not in battle. No, Ron died in a stupid household accident. The morning he went to pick Harry from his relatives' house he tripped on one of Dudley's toys as he reached the top of the stairs, fell backwards and broke his neck when he landed at the bottom. This happened the day of Fleur’s and Bill’s wedding, and his death devastated all the Weasleys, Hermione, him, and the Order. Everyone was in shock and the couple wanted to postpone the ceremony, but Mrs. Weasley would have none of that. She decided that they would proceed with her eldest son's wedding. She thought that was what Ron would have wanted. Harry, Hermione, the twins, and Ginny disagreed, and told her that if she thought that then she didn’t know her own son. Ron would have craved the attention even after being dead.
Harry stayed at the Burrow after the ceremony, and for a few days longer to be with the family and grieve his best friend. Hermione stayed with them too. She had nowhere to go as her parents had stopped talking to her. Both doctors Granger wanted her to leave the magical world. They had read on the Daily Prophet that the war against He-Who-Must-Not-Be Named was starting, and that their daughter played an important part on it. Her parents ordered her to leave the wizarding world and she flatly refused.
Hermione knew there was no way she could go back to the muggle world, especially since she had already lost seven years of 'normal' schooling, and neither did she want to. The young witch was already seventeen, an adult in her world, and able to make decisions for herself. So she packed all her belongings and left her parents home. Loosing her family was very hard, and to make matters worse, only a month later she lost the guy that was her boyfriend.
With no where to go, and almost no money Hermione was in a very dire situation, and like the good friend that he was Harry offered her a place to live, and to take care of her expenses until the war was over and she could work. They both decided not to go back to Hogwarts for their seventh year, study on their own, dedicate themselves to locating the Horcruxes and destroy them.
On the day of his seventeenth birthday the young wizard received a letter from Gringotts were he was informed that he had access to the Potter family vaults as well as the Black. He had been named their sole heir, so he was quite wealthy. He needed to visit the bank to sign some documents, get a full statement on his finances, and find a place where he could locate his home base. Ron's death put the visit on hold for a few days, but Harry knew he needed to go on and would not be free to mourn his best friend's passing as he wanted and needed to.
During the time Harry stayed with the Weasleys Ginny had been clingy wanting to resume their relationship. She even tried seducing him and getting herself pregnant to secure his presence by her side. Hermione saw her drink a potion -that turned out to be a fertility potion- and then go to the room where he was staying in the middle of the night. The brilliant Gryffindor witch thought that strange and checked the vial. The brew was one of those ready-made ones that people could buy at the apothecary, and it was a good thing since the label was enough to identify what it was.
Hermione could not believe the girl would resort to something so low to get a hold of Harry. Ginny knew he was terrified of loosing those close to him. Adding the responsibility of a child when Harry was Voldemort's main target was, to put it simply, very cruel. Hermione raced to her best friend's room and was on time to stop him from falling into Ginny's trap. Their loud argument woke the family, and they found out the girl’s intention. The Weasleys were barely holding on, and their daughter's behaviour had only added to their pain. They were angry, betrayed, and hurt, but accepted her excuses as a result of her grief over Ron's death. Her parents believed her, but the twins, Hermione, and Harry did not.
They all realized that Ginny had been asking way too many questions about Harry's inheritance, and of the family she seemed the least affected by her brother's fatal accident. A careful review of her behaviour while they were together the previous term led everyone to believe that she was more after Harry's fame and money than after Harry himself. This was another big shock for the young wizard, but he was not alone. He had Hermione, and the twins. They became very close, and over protective of each other, and Ginny had not liked that at all.
After the problem with the youngest Weasley, neither Harry nor Hermione felt they could remain with the family. It had become awkward, and the red headed girl only seemed contrite in front of her parents. She glared at Hermione, and still tried to corner Harry alone, but Hermione or the twins would not leave their friend's side at all. She even escorted him to the loo, and it became so obvious that Arthur and Molly began noticing the pattern. So when three days after the incident Harry and Hermione said their goodbyes they let them go without a protest.
The friends immediately headed for Gringotts where a goblin named Garok read James and Lily Potter's Wills, Sirius Black’s, and to the youths surprise Albus Dumbledore's. The later left Harry several things he believed would help the boy in his quest. The young Gryffindor inherited the old wizard’s pensieve, and a surprisingly large amount of memories, most of the Headmaster's personal library -which Harry planned on sharing to Hermione's utter delight- a good amount of his work journals, money, a few trinkets, and the best of all, a nice house by the sea in Cornwall.
No one knew about that particular property. It had been his refuge during the war against Grindewald. It was already well warded, and Dumbledore had added even more wards than the place already had. He had over fifteen years to prepare for that once Harry had been marked by Voldemort. The Fidelius Charm was also in place, it only needed the final step where the Secret Keeper was selected. Albus had been sure Hermione could take care of performing the last part. She was not only an incredibly smart witch; she was also powerful on her own right.
The old Headmaster had been aware he was dying since he recovered Slytherin's ring. He did not take into consideration that some Dark Arts curses -especially those created by Tom Riddle himself- could only be countered by equally Dark spells, and that had signed his death warrant. Dumbledore was lucky that Snape was a brilliant wizard that not only still practiced the Dark Arts, but had created several Dark curses and potions. Because of that, the Death Eater turned spy had been able to slow the curse that was slowly destroying Albus’ body. Unfortunately not even Fawkes’ tears could heal the damage.
Dumbledore had been aware that recovering the locket would probably speed his death, and possibly it would be in a most unpleasant manner. He did not want his 'going into the next great adventure' to be in vain and leave the youths he cared about so much unprotected. So the old wizard put all of his personal affairs in order and took the time to provide Harry with a place where he could be safe once he left the Dursleys. His death in front of the young Gryffindor bought protection for his boys similar to the one Lily Evans-Potter gave her son. He knew it would be traumatic for both of them, but he hoped they would be able to overcome it someday. They were strong ‘men’ forged by hard lives. Dumbledore also left Harry a letter where he explained some things about his death.
Harry decided to wait to read the letter until he was at the house and the Fidelius Charm in place. He pocketed it and proceeded to take care of his finances -he was even wealthier than he thought- got the deeds and locations of several properties that belonged to both the Potters and the Blacks, and visited the vaults to see if there was something useful for their quest. Thankfully there were several things, books, notes, some jewellery enchanted for protection and other things, some light dragon hide armour, five empty pensieves, several work journals -all of Lily Potter's included- and the oddest thing to find was... a Horcrux.
Finding one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes in one of the Potter’s vaults had been a shock. It was a dagger that originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor, and since the Potters were direct descendants from the Founder it had been in his family's possession for generations. His great grandfather Matthew Potter was the last Potter that owned the valuable weapon. The dagger had been stolen the night he was murdered -by an Avada Kedavra- and although there were suspicions that his year mate Tom Marvolo Riddle had killed him there was never any proof; so his murder had remained a mystery for years. It had been James Potter who recognized it as a family heirloom, and recovered it later, after the raid of an important Death Eater's mansion.
James knew the dagger had been cursed, the blade exuded Dark Magic, but he had not been able to either identify or remove the curse. He had considered it very dangerous and that had been the reason why he had stored it in the family Vault along with his notes on all he attempted to do to get rid of whatever it was that tainted what used to be a light weapon. Of course James Potter never thought that the darkness was caused by having a piece of Voldemort’s soul attached to it. Very few people had ever heard the word Horcrux, and even less knew what one really was.
, After they finished at Gringotts. The friends apparated to the Ministry, well Hermione apparated the both of them, so Harry could take his test. Harry passed with no problem and got his license. Afterwards they moved to the house Dumbledore prepared for the young wizard. It was beautiful and ample, yet it was not a mansion. Before they looked around Hermione performed the final part of the Fidelius Charm, with Harry as the Secret Keeper. Once it was done, they were surprised to see Fawkes join them. He landed on Harry's shoulder, and before the teen could do a thing, the phoenix had made a cut on the boy's throat and drew some blood. He then called forth some fire and healed it.
The procedure left a small mark barely resembling a phoenix in flight, and they both learned that it was the way the fiery birds bonded with their chosen witches or wizards. They also learned that phoenixes had more abilities than most people believed. They were telepathic and communicated mentally with those people they chose to, not just their familiars. It had been long since Fawkes had talked to anyone besides Albus, but he chose to do so with Hermione. He had knowledge that she could put to good use.
