Oooh, haven't done one of these for a while!
Circleville: Tonight we're going to go see the marching bands at the Circleville Pumpkin Show. WHEEEEEEE. Also the pumpkins.
The Hidden Goddess: Been reading The Hidden Goddess by M. K. Hobson. It's the sequel to The Native Star, set in AU 19th century America. It is extremely Deadlandsy. So much so that I actually started running a campaign based on it which sort of fizzled out because the lead moved to another state. Oh well. I'm enjoying it - it's basically the same as the last one. It's frustrating because the plot is overwhelmingly refusing to let the two main characters talk to each other for any length of time - with, I'm sure, eventual disasterous consequences. Oh well.
Under the Canopy: Read another book by Barbara Paul! Good times. But this might well demand its own post.
Pumpkin Party: Our annual pumpkin party is going to be this saturday! YOU'RE ALL INVITED. :P Sadly, I have to work all day, so we will not be going out to the farm in the morning. Alas. BUT! The Other One managed to secure a copy of "Halloween is Grinch Night" from the library. So that should be good fun.
Walking Dead: The Walking Dead started up again. Whee! Lauri is mildly less hateful these days. Rich went crazy - but seems to have gotten over it. Well, he's still pretty crazy, but more in a suicidally driven way than in an A God Am I way. And it means we get to see Baby Isabelle. Oh man, she's so prelinguistic. She's just on the cusp of attaching signifier to signified and it's awesome to watch.
CABS: The Other One is running for a board position in the Board Gaming Society. Voting is tomorrow.
AKOTAS: Anyone else find it interesting that Arthur announced himself only by his name in
today's strip? No "high king of British Space" or anything like that. Well, there's certainly also something suspicious going on, but it makes me wonder if that means he's standing by his abdication and genuinely doesn't know about Mordred's difficulties yet. And it re-raises the question of whom exactly he was referring to when he said "this demands the attention of the High King of British Space"
a few strips back...
More AKOTAS: I finally ran across
the strip that I thought was a perfect example of Darmok and Jalad style communication. In-comic Gawain has just killed Pellinore. Paul Gadzikowski says more about what that means for him in those four sketches than he could have done in a page of text. And for those unfamiliar with deciphering the triangle style, what we have is "Amok Time", "Genesis of the Daleks", the destruction of Alderaan in the original Star Wars, and the Buffy Season 2 finale. Buffy is a redhead here because that's actually Lancelot and Guenivere. Anyway.
Old friends: I unexpectedly contacted my co-author yesterday, whom I haven't really spoken to for about thirteen years. He has a baby! And a beard! Hooray!
Saag: I made the best Saag Paneer ever on Tuesday. Thought you should know. My greens seem to have really taken to this cooler weather.
Doctor Who: Been watching through "The Time Meddler" with Erin. It's SO GOOD. Not where I normally would have chosen to start anyone on Doctor Who, although there's a surprisingly large amount of introductory stuff, because of the new companion. Also William Hartnell beating up vikings. Yeah. I've been struck by a couple of things. Unlike the later format, here it's the Doctor who wanders off and gets kidnapped, and the companions who are taking things more cautiously. Although part 3 was entirely Vicki and Stephen going back and forth through the same secret passage for half an hour. This was made up for by the fact that they finally got to announce one of the better cliffhangers in the show (which was sadly lost on Erin as this was her first episode) - "The Monk has a TARDIS!" Note - this is the first indication ever that the TARDIS is not unique in creation. We won't meet the Time Lords for another four seasons...but the Monk has a TARDIS. But anyway. I do love this episode, and Erin is enjoying it too. Success! And this will be my only "First Doctor Era" post that isn't about Ian Chesterton. Huh.
Babylon 5: It has just been pointed out to me that Babylon 5 passes the Bechdel Test. In its first episode. And then repeatedly across the show. In related news, what's the episode that only has two speaking characters in it? (Hah, the assumption my brain is making is "Which one of the torture episodes is it?" But it's not the one with Ta'Lon and it's not the one with Mr. Sebastian - maybe it's the one with the sandwiches? But doesn't that Drazi have lines? Oh well.)
Dryer: My dryer is broken. We think it's the heating element. This is somewhat distressing.
Music: I kind of need to own the album "Minus Ten and Counting." It's space filk from 1983. But it keeps giving me Apollo 1 feelings. Also, "The Ballad of Apollo XIII" is freakin incredible. But then, it's the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
More different Music: I played recorder with Rachel last week. It was awesome! We need to get back into the habit of doing that.
Shape Note: The Other One and I entirely carried Shape Note last week, since two of our regulars were out of town. I did most of the pitching. And sang bass. It was rough. But successful!
Work: I'm currently being payed money to play with legoes. Yeah.
