The Right Stuff

Feb 19, 2012 02:23

Monday is the 50th anniversary of the Friendship 7 flight, the first manned craft to orbit the earth. In honor thereof, February 20th will hereafter be "John Glenn Day" - in the state of Ohio at least. Senator Glenn is speaking at OSU, and I'm co-running Rocket Camp.

To celebrate, we had a Mercury 7 party tonight. For the record, I would have had said party to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Freedom 7 last year had it occurred to me. But then, you can never have too many parties. Anyway. After our normal Deadlands, we had folks over to help us watch "The Right Stuff." We have only just finished, because that is a three hour long movie. We also played 1000 Blank White Cards and ate rocket pops. It was an awful lot of fun.

...and then we spent the whole time making Chuck Yaeger jokes. Because, according to the movie, at least, Chuck Yaeger is basically God. It's...a really good movie. And a really good book. You should read it! But the book doesn't have soundtrack from the Planets.

And the Other One made a ton of food and we ate basically all of it, and only one person fell asleep before the movie ended. But, yeah, I hadn't seen it in basically 15 years - definitely worth the rewatch! I feel ready and prepped for Rocket Camp on Monday - at least in terms of enthusiasm.

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
