ivory

I just started this free e-seminar called Creativity Bootcamp. I'm not sure the crowd is exactly my style (lots of photographers mostly), but I came across it, and it's free, so I thought I'd try it out.

Today was the first day and we got a word prompt, "ivory" to serve as inspiration for whatever we wanted to create in whatever medium.

luckily i had a long car ride (when I often do my best creative thinking and processing) to and from columbia where I met up with jesnie to see a movie. I came up with a few ideas, some very complicated. I knew I had to keep it relatively simple.

I decided to work with a doily to try to emulate ivory carving, which is very often incredibly intricate.

So much for simple.

First day of bootcamp and it's going on 3am. I'm not sure I'll last for the rest of the 2 weeks (there's a new set of inspirational instructions every day), but I'll give it my best. I will have to actually simplify what i do in the future, maybe limit my time to an hour or something.

Good god I'm tired.

Oh yeah, here's what I did:

I used pencil which I don't do that often, but have been wanting to try it out. I wanted a pretty soft look for this drawing, so the gray graphite was a good choice. The actual drawing is a bit darker, but I like the lightened up version better, at least for the ivory theme.

While I was waiting for the scan to finish I doodled a sketch version without looking at the original.

I realize I literally worked backwards from what might traditionally be expected, but what can I say? I'm a wacky, unpredictable rebel. I really hope some of this makes sense when I read it again tomorrow!
