There Are Places I Remember...In My Life...Though Some Have Changed

Some Forever, Not for Better . . .

The last post I made in this old haunt of mine was in 2020 when I was just about to dive into a nostalgic orgy of Harry Potter reading and posting, but Ms. Rowling short-circuited that by unveiling her commitment to, what shall I call it? . . .the backlash against trans rights activism? . . .sternly patrolling ( Read more... )

Congratulations on the soon-arriving grandchild!

Ever since Rowling really went off the deep end with her anti-trans tenets, I've been almost scared to pick up my Harry Potter books (even though rereading them six years ago after my mother's death, was truly a comfort and a bit of catharsis). I'm glad to learn that you still enjoyed revisiting them so perhaps I might dare to do so as well. And I most likely will read that epilogue of your symbolism essay.

I will remind everyone when I post it. If I actually remember to post it next April!

I forgot to say ... thank you for the good wishes!

Glad to see you back angua after a long absence and that you still enjoyed the original series after many years. Just quickly read through the informative post and here are some quick thoughts ( ... )

Just saw your message then.

"I suspect she was probably writing the Fantastic Beasts scripts mostly as a kind of defensive play, to keep Warner Brothers or Disney or whomever from just taking over and doing whatever they wanted in her world, and that's why they're not very good."
Forgot to add last time that you can include the CC play script in there as well, although I can't be sure how much did Rowling write it compared with the others.

Another thought on CC play and FB films: I feel that many people who read the original 7 books as they came out had very high expectations of these new works given they were written by JKR herself, especially with the long wait between when DH was released and when they came out. They would have been difficult to meet even if they were great. But then we got what was written/filmed and that made it worse.

Replying to this a month later (I'm rarely on LJ anymore, and happened to feel nostalgic for old fandom today).

- I'm with you on being sad that fic archives like the Quill are gone. Especially as a lot of people won't have been able to save their fics. I also kind of wish at least one of those sites had stayed around. I go to another forum that's been around since 1996, although to be fair, it's barely active these days. I'm not even that active. But I can still go and "hang out" with old friends from time to time, in a way I can't with SQ.

- Congratulations on the new grandchild!-

- I know what you mean about being unsure as to whether or not you'd still be interested in HP. I haven't tried to re-read the series since, though the books are still on my shelf. My feelings are so complicated. The books were such a huge part of my life for a long time,.

. As far as Fantastic Beasts goes, I read something around the time the movies were being written that suggested JKR did exactly that, went in and took over. Of course, at the time I was ( ... )

"The first one was okay, and I really didn't like the second one. Didn't see the last two"
I thought right now there are only 3 of them? Otherwise fully agree on the films.

Oh, maybe there was only one. Sorry. That's how out of touch I am. :P

"Congratulations on the new grandchild!"

Thank you! Now that she's born, I'm over the moon about her and I don't seem to have any Potter-related thoughts any more.
