I went to hatewatch this movie yesterday. No, I didn't pay for it.
I don't want to say that it's a cromulent movie if they hadn't butchered a book that I very much love. Not that it was actively bad, not any more bad than any other summer blockbuster, but it wasn't great.
But as World War Z, adaptation of the novel... well, they really should've just called it Zombies: White People's Problems.
Why say it's an adaptation of this book, why use the name, when you're going to be ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like the book. I mean, not even that they missed the spirit of the book, but 99% of it bear zero resemblance to the actual events of the novel.
And what pains me so much is that the book, for once, tried to encompass the global aspects of a zombie epidemic instead of Amurrika. It didn't succeed in all the places; there are some very valid criticisms in its portrayals. But it actually fucking tried. There was so much stuff it got into, regarding class and race and geo-politics. And the movie was all Brad Pitt Saves The World.
They could've done WWZ Contagion-style. While I love the book for the fact that it's AFTER the epidemic, I'm fine, for visual purposes, if the events in the book are portrayed instead. There's SO MUCH good shit there. Then it'd actually be global. Then you could cast more people of color in more prominent roles.
But no. So fuck you, Brad Pitt. Fuck you for ruining one of my fave books. Fuck you for whitewashing it. Fuck you for making it so that I am unlikely to get a legit movie adaptation, probably ever.
i feel strongly about this,
f is for fail,
movies,
fuck you very much,
if it ain't white it ain't right
