Don't expect Jason Statham to play anything other than action men on the big screen - he insists he isn't suitable for any other role.
The former diver and street jewellery hustler is about to be seen in new high-energy movie Safe, in which his character is embroiled in a deathly battle between the Triads, Russian mobsters and crooked New York cops.
And following roles in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and The Transporter films, Statham insists he is unlikely to stray from his hardman roles - and take on a romance, court thriller or period drama anytime soon.
He tells the BBC, "I don't want to upset the apple cart. I don't want to try something for the sake of doing something different.
"Doing something different is for great character actors. I don't see myself as a great character actor that will play a lawyer and then something bizarrely different. That's not what my strength is."
And the actor admits he is happy developing his career within one genre of film.
He adds, "I enjoy what I'm doing. I'm making a career out of something that I'm enjoying."
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting him to play a lawyer either though omg
yesdrizella our dreams of him being in Guys and Dolls are dashed for now, and as much as I do think he is legit a good actor when he tries (he totally is, I swear to god), he is, as he says, not a character actor. But I've been so desperately wanting him to do something non-action. It doesn't have to be bizarrely different. It doesn't have to be a romcom or a period drama. Just not Action Guy, Variation #2398478293. He was sooooooooo good in Snatch, and that was comedic. Revolver was a right mess, but Statham blew my fucking mind in that. They were both still crime movies. It's not a total deviation of genre. But his characters were different.
He does the action stuff well, except that's become questionable imo. I'm glad he's still enjoying it, but it feels like a part of him has shut off. Coasting. He always gave something interesting to me, just look at my Transporter meta, but lately, he feels flat. I STILL haven't seen his last two movies. There's also a part of me that's still pretty choked about the ending to The Mechanic, though that's not his fault.
Safe is out next week, and I think I will actually hit the theater for this one. I wish I were more enthusiastic about it, but at least I feel somewhat motivated to see it, unlike Killer Elite. I hope he gives me a spark or something. REMIND ME WHY I'M IN LOVE WITH YOU, STATHAM.
