Fassbender was amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. I already had high expectations for him, because I luvs him, but he was even better than I could've hoped for. McAvoy, not as much, but I feel like that's a bit of an issue with what they had on the page for Xavier.
XAVIER + MAGNETO HOLY SHIT OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. The subtext has always been there, but holy crapola, they were slashy as all hell. WHERE ARE THE FICS? There is no way there won't be fics, c'mon.
The ideological difference between Xavier and Magneto is well chronicled in the previous movies, but this one didn't feel like a rehash. Instead, it made all their differences so much more immediate and personal. I felt like I really understood it even more than before, for seeing how they came together and how they came apart, and the events that shaped them into who they are and who they will be. I like that they made Xavier a privileged tool. It contrasted with Erik's upbringing. But at the same time, as I said, it left McAvoy with a character who essentially suffered no drastic change until the end of the movie. You completely understand Erik's motivations and why he feels so strongly, but you never really get Xavier's convictions. His faith in humanity seems more academic while Erik's pain is super real (and Fassbender's intensity, holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit). This is why I really want a next one, because that will be where McAvoy can show how Xavier still clings to his ideals even after what he's suffered through, and then his convictions will seem more real, more tried and tested.
As for the slash, a;fdljafkl;djafkljdafk;jafkljasfd. WHEN THEY FIRST MET. THAT BIT WITH MOVING THE SATELLITE DISH. THE STRIP CLUB. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Seriously, I want fic. I want porn. I WANT EVERYTHING.
Kevin Bacon was PERFECT. The first time they announced his casting, I was like WUT. Then they announced that he'll be playing Sebastian Shaw, and while I'm not super familiar with the character, I actually ended up thinking that Bacon would be perfect for Shaw based on what I do know of the character. And omgggggggggg he's indeed PERFECT. Utterly charismatic while being creepy wrong at the same time. A guy you know will only lead you down the garden path, but he's so convincing about it.
I've seen criticism of January Jones' performance. IDK. I'm not familiar with her. I don't watch Mad Men, but she seemed a pretty perfect embodiment of Emma Frost, cool and poised and beautiful and icy, practically detached from it all. I didn't find her stiff and flat. The character is not exactly a drama queen, so I'm not sure what the expected performance is supposed to be.
I'm pretty neutral about Jennifer Lawrence. I actually do like the actress, but she neither disappointed me nor impressed me. Competent, I think would be the word. Rose Byrne didn't annoy the fuck out of me, which is an amazing feat. But I'm pretty annoyed that the only black guy in the movie is the one who gets killed, of course, and the other PoC becomes a turncoat. Sigh.
There were sooooooooooo many "hey it's that guy" in this movie btw. It's heaven for me. You got Agent Pierce Glenn Morshower, Michael Ironside, Matt Craven, James Remar, Rade Serbedzija, Ray Wise, Brendan Fehr, Jason Beghe, and probably a whole bunch more. XD

How is this movie supposed to fit in before the existing X-Men movies? Because they keep saying it's not a reboot, but certain things don't really jive. Not direct contradictions, but... retcons, I suppose. The friendship between Mystique and Xavier, Alex Summers being there at the age that he is (meaning that he's the older brother in this universe, if he and Scott are even brothers at all), the inconsistency of Beast, etc, etc. So. Actually I'm fine if this is supposed to be a reboot. Normally, I'd be annoyed, but in this case, TOTALLY OKAY AS LONG AS THEY MAKE MORE WITH THE SAME ACTORS,AND BY SAME ACTORS I MEAN FASSBENDER AND MCAVOY.
