I think I might leave my house to Stanley the Chestnut when I die...

I just love this. Trees SHOULD own themselves. And God knows that the trees around here can use some legal rights, the way they're being wantonly murdered to shoehorn in yet another cookie cutter McMansion into a plot which should not support that size of house ( Read more... )

That is just fabulous. I love trees, and the idea of one owning itself (i.e. not being owned by anyone) is poetic and wonderful. :)

Not a bad idea. You'd have to find someone you trust and give him or her power of attorney for the tree, I think, to deal with rentals and such, trees being notoriously bad at signatures. (Maybe a pen made from the wood of a twig?) Or maybe setting up a trust with an administrator would be a better long-term solution. And you could then stipulate that any of the rent not needed for taxes and care of the house and land could go toward planting trees in places that need them, or some other appropriate charity. (Or to your heirs, of course, if you have other ones.)

What an interesting idea. Simply lovely.

I have considered growing a tree on our new property, but that will only get done once the new house is built. I suppose I could start it in a pot for now, right? Now to figure out what kind of tree ;o)

Where do you live? If it's in a temperate climate and you like foliage in the autumn, you can go with something flashy like a maple or a chestnut or an oak. Or a silver birch. Or a linden tree, if you like scent in spring.

Or if you live in colder climes you can go for a conifer. Cedar, fir, that sort of thing.

I have a fricking REDWOOD planted out back [grin]
