Ugly Duckling
Eeteuk sighed.
Sukira just ended. Eeteuk was packing up his things when Eunhyuk bid goodbye, telling him he should head first for a reason he didn't have the chance to ask. Eunhyuk was gone before he could even stop him. He didn't want to go home alone. For a second, he thought of calling Kangin, but declined the idea after a while. Kangin's busy; he didn't want to disturb his dongsaeng.
Eeteuk sighed once again, standing and waiting for a taxi outside the building. But even tired, he was happy. July 1 just started yet he already received a lot of greetings from fans, friends, relatives and family; all except his Super Junior dongsaengs.
The ride to the dorm was slow and smooth, much to his liking. Somehow, it helped him relax after such long and tiring day. He leaned his back at the cold wall of the elevator, taking the time to rest just a little while.
He walked the long hallway before he faced a familiar door. When he walked in, he was surprised to see their dorm dark. He wondered where the others had gone. Later on, he moved his hand to the familiar light switch, but the bulb remained off even he already switched it on. Just as he was about to wonder why, a small light started to light from the center of the room. Eeteuk stared at it with full interest.
The light went a little bigger, and Eeteuk was surprise to see a chair in front of a mini theater on top of a long table. Entranced, he walked towards the chair and sat on it, eyes still on the mini theater. He watched with curiosity as dark blue light lit the mini stage of the theater, and a calm sound of harmony was heard from somewhere, then there was a voice.
"Once upon a time..." the voice started, as there appeared mini papercut-on-stick structures of bushes and lake, making a picture of a dark night on a forest, “...there was an ugly duckling, living alone and sad near the lake." A papercut-on-stick duck appeared in the lake.
The voice, a very familiar voice, continued, "He hid in the dark, thinking his ugliness could make most-probably, all-creatures hate him. Therefore, he lived friendless.
Then, one morning," the picture was changed to a beautiful morning at the lakeshore with twelve smaller ducklings, "...twelve ducklings were lost on the lakeshore. Ugly Duckling watched them behind his hiding place. To his surprised, one of them noticed him.
'Hey there...' said the fat duckling. Scared, Ugly Duckling hid more but the fat duck held his wing and pulled him gently out of the dark, 'Don't be afraid. I'm Kangin.'
Other ducks looked at him with wide eyes, and he felt conscious again. But it was changed to relief when the twelve ducks smiled at him."
"It was the start of good friendship of thirteen ducklings and they called themselves Super Ducklings (for a reason they will forever ducklings even they turn to be ducks)." The voice trailed off, Eeteuk still watching the show.
"Ugly Duckling felt responsible for the twelve for he knew they were innocent enough to be lost or to be hurt easily. He became strict to them and sometimes, overprotective. Even there were times he was the one to receive bruises and pain from other wild animals; he protected his dear ducklings with all he got. They were his first bunch of friends after all. The happiness they give was enough to sacrifice his life for them willingly.
"But, his strictness was sometimes misunderstood by the twelve ducks, they dislike him sometimes. They yelled at him, telling him to stop mothering them for he wasn't their mother. Ugly Duckling felt pained but never gave up. They could hate him, but that wouldn't stop him from caring about them, from loving them.
But unknown to him, they love him more than they dislike him. Sure, he was strict and scolded them for some minor things, won’t allow them to do what they want sometimes because it was dangerous as what Duckling said, but they knew behind those was concern and unconditional love of a mother-like, a hyung, a friend, a leader who would do anything to protect them."
The voice continued with soft yet sincere tone, "The twelve ducks seen him cry secretly, they would never tell him but they would do their own stuffs to make him happy. One would dance with him, one would ask him to play games, would act cute, would bully another duck, would cook delicious foods, would offer his foods, would introduced him to turtles, would tell him about God, would smile at him all day, would sing for him, would tell him about aliens, would tell him cats are dangerous, just to make him laugh, to make him happy. Because Ugly Duckling's unique and special laugh was all what it takes for them to feel happy."
“Ugly Duckling was never ugly for them. In fact, they thought he was the most beautiful duck they had ever seen. They knew if he was another duck, they will not be the same as what they are.
He was so special that he could be more than a Swan Prince.
Ugly--no, just Duckling. Duckling promised to protect them, and they also promised to protect him. Because they knew, without him, Super Ducklings wouldn't last long.
Without him, Super Junior wouldn't even know what success means."
The curtains on the mini theater slowly closed. Then, the light turned on as twelve boys emmersed from behind the long table, Kangin holding a mic.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TEUKI!!"
Eeteuk was already crying before the puppet show was done. Sungmin and Ryeowook ran towards him and hugged him.
"Hyung, don't cry." Sungmin said.
"I'm not. Th-there's something in my eyes." said Eeteuk, making everyone laughed. "Thank you so much! It's the best birthday gift ever! I love you, guys!"
"We love you, too." said Ryeowook.
"Especially Kangin!" Donghae added, making everyone laughed again.
"Cake time!!" announced Shindong, holding up a big cake.
They gathered around the floor and shared the big cake. The party wasn't that big but it was enough to make this big group smile contently.
With one bunch of twelve crazy friends, Eeteuk couldn't ask for more.
