Merlin glared down at Arthur. Or more precisely, Arthur’s back. “You’re the one who wanted me to do this,” he snapped. “So stop complaining.”
“You know, Gaius has a much better bedside manner,” Arthur pointed out between grit teeth.
“I’m sure he does. After dealing with your family for over three decades, he’d have to.”
“So why haven’t you - Ow!”
Merlin leaned back and sighed. “Arthur, this isn’t working. Let me get Gaius -”
“No! I forbid it!”
“Arthur,” the warlock said with exaggerated patience, “it’s not as though Gaius will laugh at you or gossip about it with everyone. You know how he believes that what goes on between a physician and a patient -”
“ - stays between a physician and a patient,” Arthur finished, pushing his arms beneath him so he could raise his shoulders from off the bed. “I know that, but if you bring him here, he’ll undoubtedly be seen. Someone will gossip about it, and it won’t be an hour before my father hears of it. He’ll come barreling in here, demanding to know what’s wrong with me.”
Merlin winced. He made a good point. Uther was a stern, sometimes even cruel, parent, but he was always extremely careful over his only son’s health. If he learned that the Court Physician had been summoned to Arthur’s apartments, he’d naturally assume that some kind of illness was involved. Of course he’d be concerned. Arthur’s… ailment, however, was much less life-threatening and much more… embarrassing.
They’d hardly meant to fall asleep on the banks of the forest lake after a long, leisurely swim, after all, much less fall asleep nude. Merlin had escaped the sun’s effects, thank goodness - he wondered if he had fallen asleep in a shady spot or if he had his magic to thank - but Arthur hadn’t been so fortunate. His back had been burned slightly, but not too severely, but it was his backside that had taken the worst of it. The skin was an ugly, bright shade of red, painful to the touch. The condition would last for days, Merlin knew, and Arthur was certain to be insufferable throughout the entire ordeal.
He sighed and picked up the jar of ointment he’d sat down on the bed next to him. “Shall I start again?”
Arthur took a deep breath, and then released it slowly. “Yeah, get on with it.”
Merlin took a large gob of the ointment onto his fingers and gently began to rub. Arthur flinched, but did not complain again. “Isn’t there something else you could do?” he asked.
“What?”
“With, you know,” Arthur replied, wiggling his fingers in a vague manner.
Merlin raised an eyebrow, but shook his head. “It’s not safe to use it directly on the body, not without extensive training, which I don’t have.”
Arthur groaned and let his head fall against his pillows. “What is it good for then?” he asked, his voice muffled.
Merlin rolled his eyes and continued rubbing the ointment in. “How about saving your pratish life at least once a week, usually from women who either want you to fall madly in love with them, want to kill you, or both?”
“Shut up, Merlin.”
