I know I bitch and whine a lot in my journal (hey, that’s what journals are for, right?), but I wanted to share an event from this morning. On the way to work, late as usual, I stopped for a pop because I ended drinking the pop allotted for today yesterday (did I mention I was up at 6:00 am?). As I made my way from the coolers to check-out, a gentleman walked into the convenient store. He had two days growth of white beard on his face. His clothes were cleaned but the furthest away from new as you can get without reaching rags. At the counter, he started to say something when he stopped. He picked up a twenty dollar bill from the floor between us.
“Is this yours?” He asked me immediately. I didn’t have cash on me so I replied that it wasn’t mine. He turned to the clerk and asked the same question. The clerk stated it wasn’t his, but looked to be thinking. He brought up a woman’s name, saying she was just in the shop. He set the twenty aside with the verbal reassurance that she would be back.
The gentleman paid six dollars for gas and left. The clerk thanked him and stated that the women who would be missing the money went to church and would pray for him. He smiled as he went out the door.
All I could think about while watching the men talk was, “This will never be on the news. No one else will ever know about this gentleman’s kindness. He was someone who could use the twenty dollars but he didn’t hesitate to do the right thing.”
For today, my faith in humanity was restored.
