Orochimaru rarely sleeps, because when he does, that ever-present scent of strawberries invades his dreams and makes a serene night's slumber near impossible. Instead he spends most nights lying in bed, contemplating various things. Tonight his mind had wandered to the owner of that unavoidable sweet stench. His hand trailed through the perfumed hair idly as he realised the sheer irony of the position they were in - the young man's head snuggled against this chest, an arm draped over the sannin's bare torso almost possessively. Orochimaru knew differently - that the young nin, whose hand was unconsciously tracing patterns down his side, was anything but possessive. He'd known that from some of the exploits the youth had performed during missions and that one time he had discovered the silver-haired nin in a compromising position with Sasuke-kun. Sure, the boy was protective of his mentor, like any good student should be, but he was also a servant, and servants by their very nature betray.

He knew Kabuto was like any other servant in that respect - in fact, he knew more about Kabuto than most people realised. He knew that Kabuto was ticklish on his collarbone and by exploiting that fact, one could get the bespectacled youth to agree to anything. He knew that Kabuto was an avid lover of fish, but hated shrimp. He knew that he was the first person Kabuto had ever slept with and that, for days after, Kabuto had prayed to God for forgiveness for his deviant behaviour. He also knew that Kabuto refused to use any shampoo that didn't smell like strawberries, that he read the Old Testament before he went to bed and that the only reason he didn't leave Orochimaru's quarters after sex was because he was too tired to.

Orochimaru also knew that Kabuto's infidelity was not a problem - after all, they had a mutually unspoken agreement that whatever "this" was, it was definitely not a coupling or romantic relationship - but it was the odd deeds that whispered "betrayal" that bothered him. Or at least, that's what he told himself. After all, there are different kinds of infidelity - and infidelity in something both parties agree is not a romantic relationship can't really be infidelity - but betrayal is betrayal wherever one finds it.

He inhaled the scent of strawberries once more as Kabuto stirred in his sleep, and closed his eyes, trying to dream about something other than that overwhelming scent.
