Chapter 7

Lois Lane looked up at her ex-husband, noticing for the first time he wasn’t paying any attention to her. She had been telling him about her weekend with Richard, her new boyfriend and Perry White’s nephew,  when she had looked across their desks to see him with a dopey smile across his face. She had seen that look occasionally during the time they were together, but during those times they were directed at her, now Clark seemed to be staring off into space as well.

Since their divorce and Clark’s move to Bruce Wayne’s manor, Lois hadn’t asked what their relationship was, (the rumours in the media were enough). She still wasn’t sure how she felt if the rumours were true, so she hadn’t felt inclined to ask Clark about it. But seeing that look on his face, made her think that they were something more than friends. It was also weird, due to the fact Bruce was still a married man and according to the papers Diana was staying at the manor as well as their infant daughter.

When Wonder Woman had first appeared, Lois’ initial reaction had been of jealously. She was beautiful woman and seemed to enjoy spending time with her then boyfriend, Clark aka Superman. It was with great relief that she learned that Diana was interested in Batman and after much fighting to make him hers, they finally started dating. During that time Clark had proposed to Lois and nothing made her happier then to hear those words and getting married just sealed the deal. At first, she was happy that she had finally got everything she wanted, Clark was her husband and no one else could lay claim on her man. Unfortunately, Lois hadn’t realised what it meant to be Superman’s wife.

The first year they were married, everything was perfect. Clark was busy saving the world and finding time to write, as well as spending the remanding time with Lois. Meanwhile, Lois was off chasing leads and being rescued by Superman, which usually led to passionate releases back in their apartment. But those moments had become far and few towards the end of their marriage, they had become focused on other things instead of each other, until Lois decided it was best to end things.

She knew she had hurt Clark, when she had handed him the divorce papers, but she knew in time he would see it was the right decision. They were, after all still partners, even if they weren’t together as a husband and wife, it was nice to know that they could still work together. It was almost like the old days before they had gotten involved romantically, when they were just friends. Well almost, considering Clark was still staring off into space and ignoring her, it just wasn’t right.

Lucky for her, Perry’s door to his office opened. Coming out of his office, with a look of his usual ire he shouted “Meeting! 5 minutes! Don’t be late!”

His voice seemed to cut into Clark, causing him to jump in his chair and then saw Lois watching, he gave her a sheepish look.

“Sorry Lois, were you saying something?” Clark said as Lois glowered at him from across their shared workspace.

“Why yes Clark,” she started out sounding sarcastic. “But it’ll have to wait now. We better get in that meeting before Perry gives us another of his assignments.” Lois finished with a shiver.

“Coffee?”

After a nod from Lois, Clark made his way to break room to get two cups of whatever passed for coffee in this place. At least it wasn’t some weird sludge from a few weeks ago. He remembered he complained to Bruce about it and then the next day the old coffee machine had been replaced and since then the coffee was a lot better. Thinking as he made his way to the conference room, that sleeping with the boss had some perks, it had also been who he had been thinking about before. Perhaps that may have been the reason why Lois may have been upset with him, but he couldn’t help it. That last weekend had been exactly what they both needed. Just thinking of it caused him to smile. He came back to himself as he entered the conference room, noticing everyone was already there sans Perry.

He placed Lois’ coffee in front of her and she gave him a grateful look as he took his seat. Perry took that moment to enter into the room and sit down at the head of the table.

“Ok people, what do we have on the re-election of our district attorney? Collin? Did you get in touch with your source at the DA office?

A tall, lanky man with dark brown eyes and short blonde hair looked up from his notes to answer Perry.

“Yes sir. They seem to think they have a good chance of being re-elected, although they have some tough competition from Mal Jackson. Rumour has it that Jackson was the former assistant to the DA in one of the county’s in Texas and he helped bring to justice the mob gang that was terrorising the locals.”

“Sounds like this guy should be running for Gotham not Metropolis.” Remarked Faulkner, Collin’s partner, a mousy haired man with startling blue eyes, the comment causing a slight chuckle from everyone in the room.

“I want the final on my desk by the end of the day.” Moving on the next story, Clark had half zoned out, half listening on the meeting and thinking about what Lois was probably going to want to talk about after. He looked up at Perry when he heard his and Lois’ name called.

“Lane! Kent!” Barked out Perry and Clark noticed he wasn’t the only one to have zoned out, as he looked over at his partner. “What story are you two working on? Or are you still doing individual pieces?” Perry finished seeming slightly annoyed about the last part.

“Um,” Started Clark, before Lois cut him off. “No, we’re working together again. We’re looking into the disappearance of one of the local crime bosses. It seems since his disappearance, there has been a surge in crime, all the other crime families are blaming each other and has started an all-out war in Hell’s gate. Our source at MCU thinks that a new player has come to town and is hoping that with this war, they’ll take each other out and they can take over.”

Clark look at Lois surprised, this was all news to him, but with Lois she always did the unexpected, especially when it came to writing. Clark felt a bit guilty that she had done so much research without him, but then she had always done most things without him, until she needed rescuing that is.

Tuning back into the conversation, he heard the last part of Perry giving them their deadline and adjourning the meeting. Picking up his coffee cup, he followed everyone out of the conference room.

Returning to his desk, he placed his cup on his desk and sat down in front of his computer. Lois had also followed him to his desk and judging by her expression, was trying to figure out the best way to ask him something, which was quite odd for her.

It was at the moment when Lois had just opened her mouth that his cell rang. Fishing it out of his pocket, he looked at the caller id and a look of surprised delight crossed his features.

“This is Kent.” Lois gave him a look of exasperation and moved back to her own desk, knowing he wasn’t off the hook yet.

Bruce was sitting at the kitchen table, nursing his second cup of coffee, while looking over his selection of today’s newspapers. Tim, Damian and the twins were at their respective schools and Diana was currently feeding their youngest daughter, across from where Bruce sat.

Looking through, the Gotham Gazette and The Globe, Bruce noted it must have been a slow news day, as the only piece of news worth reading was on page 4 about the rise of petty crime in the last few days. Thinking about what the boys had told him last night about what had happened down at the Docks, he had a bad feeling something big was about to go down and soon, he just had to figure out what it was before it happened. Especially considering none of his rogues had tried anything for a while and as far as he knew they were still locked up in Arkham.

Having the feeling of someone staring at him, he looked up to see his youngest, bright blue eyes wide with curiosity, looking straight at him. Diana’s giggle brought them both to look at her.

“I see something seems to have captured Ebony’s attention. It seems rather pointless to try to continue feeding her now. I’ve also found out something else she has inherited from her father.”

That last remark caused Bruce to look at her in puzzlement, before saying “What?”

“Well for starters, whenever you’re attention in on something else, your appetite for food appears to vanish and it’s impossible to get you to eat, it’s almost as bad as your inability to sleep when something capture your attention. And if Alfred was around he would probably agree with me.  Ebony has the same problem when she’s eating, now I wonder if it genetic. I should ask Alfred if your mother or father did the same.”

Bruce didn’t know what to say to that, so he just stayed silent and then changed the subject.

“What are your plans for tonight?”

“I was thinking of taking the kids into the city for an early dinner and movie. Clark and you are invited to come if you want. It might be nice to go out as a family, I’m sure the press will enjoy that.” Diana replied a smirk as she said that last part.

Bruce just let out groan and rolled his eyes. Ebony was enjoying the banter between her parents and was trying to imitate her father, seeing this Bruce couldn’t help but let out a chuckle, which in turn caused Ebony to squeal with childish laughter, clapping her hands together.

After everyone had calmed down, Bruce decided to call his lover to see if he wanted to take up Diana’s offer to go out or stay in and have the house to their selves for a couple of hours free of kids.

Taking out his cell phone, he realised Diana had risen from her chair and was in the process of picking up their daughter, as she was about to leave she leaned over him and kissed him on the forehead and left through the door. Staring at the swinging kitchen door for a moment he turned back to his phone and called Clark.

The phone rang a couple of times before being picked up “This is Kent,” came the response.

“Hey! Diana is taking the kids in the city tonight for an early dinner and movie. She wanted to know if we wanted to go or we can stay in and have the place to ourselves.

“That sounds great, but it looks like I might be stuck in Metropolis tonight. Lois and I have this story we need to do and we still need to get some more information, so I’ll just stay in the apartment here tonight. But you should go and spend time with your family and I’ll come back to the Manor tomorrow night.”

Not letting the disappointment sink into his voice, Bruce said “You know I think I will, and then I can go out afterwards and check out my city. Good Luck with your story and I’ll see you tomorrow night.” And as an afterthought, he added in almost a whisper “I love you.” Knowing the Clark would hear him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the Daily Planet, Clark had left his desk as soon he started talking, as he didn’t really want Lois to listen in on his conversation, and was presently standing in one of the utility closets. Even though it was obvious Bruce was trying to hide his disappointment, he could fool Clark and the whispered “I love you” at the end just confirmed it.

Letting a smile grace his lips at those words he would never get tired of hearing, he said the same to Bruce and finished the conversation with “have a good night and take care and I’ll see you tomorrow night.

As he hung up the phone, he couldn’t help feeling something bad was going to happen, maybe it was a vibe he was getting from Bruce. Slipping his phone into his pocket, he decided not to worry about it now, Lois was waiting back at his desk and they had work to do, plus he was sure she wanted to know what was going on between him and Bruce. That was one conversation he wasn’t look forward to. With that in mind he headed back to his Desk.
