OK, I have an issue. A lot of people will think me a cold hearted bitch after this rant, but at least hear me out. You might have heard the stories about that accident in Florida recently where 6 or 7 kids were killed after being pinned between a school bus and a truck. More was released today about their investigations. So, a bus delivering water bottles to Jacksonville slammed into a car full of kids and were therefore pinned under the school bus in front of them. A serious tradegy, yes. I am not here to dispute that fact. Another fact would be that the driver of the truck had been awake over 34 hours, including a nap somewhere there in between, a problem which absolutly must be addressed. Again I am not argueing.
Now, here is where I begin to question things. The driver of the car was a 15 year old girl. Not only that but she was on her cell phone. I understand that she was stopped behind the school bus, and that the cell phone was not a major factor in the particular incident. But she was 15 years old!!!! Why was she given the chance to be driving a car with 5 other children in there? Why was there an infant entrusted to her? My heart goes out to this family (they were all related). It really does. But if I was driving without a valid liscense, I will even go as far as saying without insurance, and I got into an accident that wasnt my fault....damnit I would be held accountable as well. The fact that these were all minors should not be a reason to overlook fault in this situation. Yes, the driver should be held at fault for this..but only to a certain extent. Why would a mother of 4 children, and the mother of the two other children, let a 15 year old girl drive around like that. It isnt as though they just told her to drive to school and back by herself. She left her house, picked up her cousins, dropped off the appropriate kids at day care, went to school, went back after school to the daycare, dropped off her cousins and went back home. Could this tradegy have been prevented? I am not sure. But I feel that a small part of blame should be placed on the mothers for allowing them to be out like that.
This is where everyone thinks that I am just the worst person on the face of earth for feeling this way. Why would I want a family that just lost 6 kids and a grandparent(whom had a heartattack after hearing the news) to feel extra pain? That is not my intent. But I would like this unfortuanate occurance to serve as a wakeup call to parents out there that nonliscensed children shouldn't be allowed driving privledges. Why was she taught that driving while using a cell phone was okay? Even if she wasn't talking right then, would she have noticed to truck in her mirrors and have been able to do something about it? The reports say that even though they weren't 100% significant, there WERE tire/break marks from the truck before impact. MAYBE an experienced driver might have seen the truck and made some kind of effort in moving at least from behind the bus.
I don't know, maybe I am the only one who feels this way, but I just needed to get that out.
