Yes, I'm still here! I still haven't finished all the exams (last one is on December 7th) but at least I have a little more of time because classes will be over next week.
I hope everyone is doing okay. I haven't had the time to read many past entries yet (I did notice that
calikalie went nuts making icons, not that we mind! and that
szaranea is having a hard time with Histology (I can't blame you, I hate that subject and I've never had it).
Good that now I have three free days (although I have to make website for my Interactive Narrative class... Imagine me, the Photoshop Genius ) thanks to the APEC (Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation) that it's being held here in Santiago. The city has gone mad with all the security stuff they are doing and all the people that's coming from different countries. And because among all the Presidents, George Bush of all people is coming too (along with Vladimir Putin) people have gotten too paranoid. Chile is usually a very peaceful country, but with all the preparations for the arrival of the Presidents, we seem to have forgotten what it is to walk on the streets without freaking out! The other day I arrived half an hour late to Uni because someone left a schoolbag in the subway station and they thought it could be a bomb. Hence, they evacuated the subway, and the streets were flooded with traffic jams. I think it's the first time something like this happens since the Coup d' Etat in 1973 *eye roll*.
And besides, the fact that Bush is coming to Chile has all the Communist and Socialists protesting all day with movilizations. Why do they have to do it downtown, where my University is?? It's annoying to try to get on the bus when there's a bunch of people screaming in the streets. They even tried to sue Bush for violating Human Rights in Irak. Of course, the Justice in this country has better things to do than suing George Bush (we have our own Human Rights' problems to deal with). They wanted Bush arrested here in Chile. Right, like we need a conflict with the US now. Besides, they have never protested when Fidel Castro has come, and as far as I know, he violates the Human Rights in ways much worse than Bush. No wonder those people brought this country to havoc in the seventies...
I think the APEC is a good oportunity for Chile, but all the stress that comes with it for us common citizens is a high price to pay. I mean, there're people that can't park their cars in front of their own houses because of security matters. Everyone is getting late to work because of the same. I didn't even know there were so many policemen in this city. Well, I can't really blame them, I mean we are quite the target for terrorists now, a small country in the end of the world and many important politics in one place.
I wonder what's Colin Powell doing here though...
And it's nice that Putin thinks so high of us for this Goverment's attitude towards the war in Irak.
I really want to see what the outsiders will think of Santiago, though. I bet they'll be shocked if one of them gets on a public bus (I pity them if they do!). Today there was a guy that had UNITED STATES written all over him and it was so obvious it was the first time he rode a bus here that I actually laughed. He gave money to every single salesman and beggar that got on to ask for a coin (yes, people do that here) and was quite impressed that we have so many street singers that sing for money on the bus.
Well, I hope I can be around more. Hugs to everyone!
